Re: Hate these Holly Shrubs - Need Help with Replacement

Remove the clay. Dig a hole 3 times wider than the root ball and a several inches deeper than the root ball, fill it up with good garden soil and replant, then mulch. Honestly, this is terrible advise. You never want to amend the planting hole, expecially with clay. I have planted hundreds of shrub...

Re: Kelp Help / Soil Conditioner Question For Small Lawn

>>Concerning these quart or half gallon jugs of concentrated kelp and HA, are these meant to be used directly on the lawn at the 2 oz/k rate, or are they meant to be used as the kelp and HA "extracts" for the BL Kelp Help plus Humates formula? Yes. :-) Or, it really doesn't matter, it works both wa...

Re: Kelp Help / Soil Conditioner Question For Small Lawn

It'll wash in, and if you can get a consistent coverage application (or at least one that averages out to consistent over time), that's fine. I tend to use a lot of water instead, but it all works out in the end after a good rainfall no matter how you do it! It sounds to me like a hose end sprayer ...

Re: ID this weed

I have a ton of these sprouting up in the yard Honestly, it hasn't been necessary up to this point. These just recently showed up. I have no other weeds in the entire yard currently. I have been spraying my treeline weekly to kill all the new weeds that keep popping up. Even put out some pre-emerge...

Re: ID this weed

Got a trumpet vine nearby? Not that I am aware of. I do have a treeline close by that has different kinds of vines, including poison oak...I have been spraying my treeline weekly to kill all the new weeds that keep popping up. Even put out some pre-emergent, which hasn't helped much. I am trying to...

ID this weed

I have a ton of these sprouting up in the yard and the stems are very thin and hard to pull. Will tenacity take care of this?

Re: Garden Weed Control

I personally like to use Preen in my mulch beds. I put some out back in March, and have only seen a few small pieces of grass come in that I easily hand pulled.

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

This may or may not be off topic but this time of year everyone, including me are itching to fertilize and just do something. The mowing keeps us busy but we sat idle all winter and all the talk of milorganite sales and big box store weed n feed sales etc.....you get sucked in. I resisted last year...

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

With you being in Tennessee and growing a cool-season grass, you really ought to tread lightly with spring and summer nitrogen applications. High fertility environments are a place where fungal issues like Brown Patch disease can thrive. Many of the members growing cool-season grasses in the south ...

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

If you did bag rate of Milo you put down .72 lbs per 1000. If he did the old formula with a 5 for the N then .72 lb per thousand it is.....and that a decently full dose for a Spring application. I'd hold off on urea.....at your temps it'll kick in quickly. Sounds good, I probably wont put out anoth...

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

And the other variable is what N rate of Milo you put down per thousand square feet. This is really important. If it was just a little bit of Milo, urea might be a good idea. Or not if it wasn't a little bit. Also, which Milo formulation was it? There are several versions out right now as they are ...

Re: Hate these Holly Shrubs - Need Help with Replacement

You are probably going to kill them worrying about them too much, just feel the soil near the crown every few days and see if they need water. Fertilizer wasn't necessary on a plant straight from a nursery. You didn't amend the soil...just left it clay? that ain't good. No i didnt..its only been in...

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

If you're temps are higher, i think you'll see the impact of the milo starting within a week......at least thats what i think as i stare at my grass each day after a milo app :) My temps are low so it's been a struggle! Yes, temps are in the mid 80s for the next 3 days, then dropping to 70s this we...

Re: Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

No one can say without knowing exactly how much Urea you plan to apply. But from where I sit I'd say It will be too much nitrogen. There is serious risk that you could burn/kill your grass. Enough said..I know that Milorganite is a light dosage of N, but just wanted to check in and see..glad I did!

Just put out an app of Milo - Can I also drop Urea?

I just put out a bag of milorganite yesterday, and was wondering if it would also be suitable to put out an application of 46-0-0 Urea on the yard? Would that be too much N? This will probably be my only app of Urea until the fall, as I really do not want to push growth during the summer months. Loo...

Re: Hate these Holly Shrubs - Need Help with Replacement

Never heard of them being an issue. Gardenias in the south are a staple. Easy shrubs to grow, the only thing you have going against you is you planted it now and not last fall. I literally plant them in the fall and forget them other than fertilizing them a little during the growing season. You'll ...

Re: Hate these Holly Shrubs - Need Help with Replacement

So I keep hearing horror stories about trying to grow a gardenia bush. Ive heard that more people kill them, or the bush dies, than success stories.

Killerv, so you have any suggestions? Or does anyone have any suggestions to help make this bush succeed?
