Re: Sedgehammer in the summer?

A few thoughts... If it is a grass-like plant with a triangular stem, and grows faster than your lawn, then it probably is a sedge. The definitive way to identify a sedge is the triangular stem, just above the roots and before the leaves all separate from the stem. You can feel this by rolling the s...

Re: Filling in tire tracks

I feel your pain on this. Had the same problem with existing lawn being driven over when replacing our septic tank a few years back. +1 on the raising the turf with a pitch fork. The needed soil is all still there to have it be level. Adding soil on top will simply bury compacted soil below. If a co...

Re: Spreader setting

I have had that exact problem, too! Putting down the small amount of sulfate of potash that is needed, particularly if using a type of SOP that has large granules, can be problematic. Setting the spreader wide enough to get reasonable flow can end up being too high of a rate. What I do now to work a...

Re: Hell Strip full of tree roots.....

Thanks it was a big job that ended up taking 2 days. My Dad is big on saving any soil he can, so we sifted any loose top soil from the sod. We saved all of that. ... Sounds like you did it right - nothing beats good prep before seeding - getting the soil properly leveled is something that is time-c...

Just FYI, as mentioned above by Pway, the Pawnee Buttes 2021 price list that I just received in the mail lists a number of Kentucky Bluegrass cultivars that are popular ones amongst readers here: Bewitched, Certified Sod Quality: $4.00/lb Blueberry, Certified Sod Quality: $4.00/lb Midnight, Certifie...

Re: Artists?

I cast a pyramid. With laser hologram glitter. And LED lights. If you look closely, you can see the bit of electronics I hid in the resin to control it, but it's not much (just a resistor; the rest is hidden in the USB head--turns out it was brighter than I wanted and I'd already sealed the head). ...

Re: Fertilizer for the year!

Thanks for sharing the news regarding the Bay State Fertilizer. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the 50-bag minimum. We no longer have our Ford Expedition, in which I could put 50 bags of BSF by folding down the rear seats and putting a half-dozen in the front passenger seat. I don't even thi...

No sign of blooming here in southern New Hampshire, either. I'm fortunate that our next door neighbor has a line of forsythia bushes just the other side of the woods from our lawn!

Re: Hosta- Too late to divide?

Oh, and while I'm at it, I figured I'd ask if Andy has any suggested changes to what you wrote about dividing hosta nearly 10 years ago.... OK. Back to work. Dividing Hosta... It's really easy. Wait until very late August or even Labor Day. Then gently tie the leaves upward and dig the roots out - 1...

Re: Hosta- Too late to divide?

I would wait for them to begin to wake up, but not long after. If done it winter when they're dormant, the cuts won't heal and they may rot. Done too late, they'll be OK but lopsided the whole season. I like to divide them as the spikes come up, or around Labor Day. PS: I moved the thread to "Shade...

Re: Would pulling up poa annua disrupt the pre-emergent layer?

Also even if pulling the poa-a damages the pre-m layer, it does prevent hundreds of little poa-a seeds getting in the lawn and sitting there for years to come up. +1 I would not hesitate to pull out a Poa annua plant due to having already applied pre-emergent. You'll be better off disrupting that o...

Yes, I have a manual kick-style sod cutter, and love it! The only problem with them is that they are crazy expensive to buy in the first place. I bought one made by Quail . I did ask for and receive a small discount (10%?) by ordering it direct from the manufacturer. It is at least a 100% US-made pr...

Re: Why new grass different colors?

I seeded a new turf type tall fescue lawn about 2 months ago. 4th gen millennium. I don't understand why it's growing faster and is a darker color where I dug the irrigation ditches. I did a thorough site prep including roundup of old weed yard, rototill, soil pulverizer/cultipacker, then carefully...
