Re: How Deep Before you Reach Hardpan

I got hit by the same winds......and while not complete fail, some got into a 45 degree lean. Restaked them. Then with the forecasting of rain today and the -topheaviness with now sheared roots-, last night, I also did some pruning to remove some of the top weight...and let it refocus now back on it...

How Deep Before you Reach Hardpan

I've planted lots in this particular area. I feel like I have dug/excavated as deep as 24 inches without no issues ? Last year, I transplanted some mature shrubs. I went about 20 inches deep and not sure what was underneath but it was either hardpan or as I was scratching my head.......a layer of br...

Raking the Crown

For dormant grass, okay to take a rake - blades are dry..

Or do I have to for at least 7-10 days of greenup before I can take a rake to it ? Just thinking about the overseed.

Re: Post emergent crabgrass killer approved in NY

I don't look at the big box stores but from memory recalls, WBG CK is not on the shelves ....

Lowes might be different as whomever does their purchasing, they sell all sorts of stuff that is not even -code approved- on their shelves.

Re: Alfafa Stink

I used to do the same Dchall ....just pull mulch bag, apply around drip line and mulch goes back.
Seems the consensus is the -tea- is more direct, and encourages basal break

Re: Soil amendments for sandy soil

I was -hoping-that the compost would act as a slight -mulch- ontop of the top of the turn and not-settle- into the sandy soil so quick, for better water retention. Obviously that was not the case.

Re: Soil amendments for sandy soil

Does compost - OM help ? Have tried that in thinking it would help retain moisture but seems like everything just seems to sink into the sand

Ha. Now I know to treat the sludge or even the fermented tea like gasoline. Wear gloves....

I was smelling like a wet horse for a good 2/3 of my day yesterday

Re: Boxwood question (wasn't sure where to post this)

Most of my box is either thin cuts in spring for air, and on some it's shearing for shaping.

Taking it back 2' or say, you might have a exposed dead center for 12-18 months IMO

OT.....been brewing up Alfalfa tea for the shrubs. I knew it had a -smell- in liquid form but OMG, don't get the -tea- on your skin. I just got my hands a smidge wet by scooping it out of the 32G container. The smell does not wash off the hands easily, and it's been a few wash/rinse cycles !

Re: Tenacity on Dormant Grass

Hell strip is about 75 dormant with whatever green slowing dormant as the days/weeks go by. The skies have opened up sparingly and we did get some irrigation for what seems to be none for a few weeks... I just wasn't quite sure would it hurt the dormant grass permanently or as I have seen tenacity, ...

Tenacity on Dormant Grass

The Hellstrip is Dormant....

Ive been handpulling anything I see. Is it okay to spot spray Tenacity if the patch is primarily dormant and I'm just spot spraying stuff I see ?

OT, but what's the consensus of herbacides, Pre-M, etc. I really ought to check if my stuff has best use dates. I'm the type that does believe when buying things to look at batch code dates, deciphering if batch codes like 020034899 is a batch code date, or if the manuf. uses something cryptic that ...

Re: Compost or Mulch for your Shrub Beds

Before I jinx it, if I get sugar ants in 2021, then I will say it's got to be the wood mulch....on the beds that are on the perimeter of the house. I did lay this a bit thin for this year...just enough to make make the beds look nice and tight and finished. I do use sluggo plus around my leafy shrub...

Compost or Mulch for your Shrub Beds

For the past few years, I've been tinkering using -compost- as my mulch in various places..... Just finished laying down 7 yards ontop of my compost in my shrub/flowerbeds. All I can say is ahhhh, nothing better than to have some nice deep brown dyed mulched to finish off the shrub beds. I will note...

KBG Shallow in Year 1

Reseeded a bare spot last fall. Is KBG root development slow in it's 1st growing season. The reseeded spot , seems to pull up easily. Was pretty dense before I did the 1st cutting and subsequent mows. As it got a bit thinner, I decided to check out how well it's in the soil. It seems to pull up -eas...

Pruning Vs. Shearing

I like the privacy hedge sheared nice, tight and square Alot of my other shrubs, I prefer the shaggy look and just prune of the really extra long ones that poke out and give it a thinning from the interior every now and then to let sunlight in. I think this year, just to switch things up, I might go...
