Re: Some lawn growing, some lawn stopped. Questions.
1. Growth has stopped in the non-irrigated sections, but the irrigated portion is still growing. Is this normal? I gave all of the aforementioned detail because there are a lot of factors at play this year. When you say that growth has stopped in the non-irrigated sections, is the grass still green...

Re: Artists?
I spent a bit of time having fun over the weekend while watching horror movies (the bloodier the better). Nothing stressful or particularly difficult, just playing with color and late fall-style images. The second I liked well enough to mount in a gallery frame and put up for the month. https://i.p...

Re: Should I mow high or low when mulching leaves?
I just mow at whatever height is appropriate for the grass, and the leaves get mulched up just fine from that height...

Lawn Stripes in the Snow!
Today, I observed a phenomenon I don't recall ever having seen before... As yesterday's snow started melting in the sun and the 45F temperatures, stripes from the wheel tracks of my recent mowings started to appear in the snow! Honestly, there wasn't any new "striping" on the lawn after the snow -- ...

We were too busy these last couple of days to take our next weekly photos, having only had sufficient time a couple days ago to blow off the leaves and mow the grass with the manual reel mower. We were planning to get pictures today... at least the color is comparatively uniform, apart from the fall...

Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation - 2020-10-21 - Day 56 Reno Photos
Busy leaf-fall time is definitely in progress! We blew many leaves off the renovation area today in order to be able to mow. Not even a quarter of the leaves have fallen yet, so we'll be continuing to clear leaves for a couple weeks until most of them are off the trees. Still mowing with the Fiskars...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation
Thanks! That’s kind of what I figured. The first few mows I bagged everything. Now that it’s a little bit established I’ve been mulching. (Plus it saves me from stopping to dump those bags!) I didn’t mean to hijack your thread...I apologize. Thank you again for your thoughts! Not a hijack at all --...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation
In that situation with the leaves...what are you going to do? Blow/mulch them off immediately? I ask out of curiosity and prep. I came home today and had leaves covering the area and I went out and mowed it the reno. (Keep in mind I’m trying to time one last Urea app before rain come) The ‘prep’ pa...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation
Last night was the first frost we had on our lawn; our "average first frost" is September 26th, so this is later than usual for us. Even last night, the frost was only in the "sunny" areas that have the greatest sky exposure. The newly-renovated portion of the lawn didn't have any frost on the grass...

Re: Frost: Right On-Time?
My average first frost date is Oct 19th according to Dave's site. In 2019, it was on the 19th, 2018 was the 30th and this morning I woke up to a pretty solid frost out front on the yard. Looks like I'm officially in the Pause. Good record-keeping. Just want to mention that if your average first fro...

Re: Frost: Right On-Time?
+1 on the "Average First Frost Date" being much more important for cool-season lawns than the actual first frost date. Our "Average First Frost Date" is Sept 26th. We haven't yet had an actual first frost here in Southern NH, although we just barely missed it on a pair of nights a few weeks ago, eve...

OK, the above had me cracking up. I hadn't even noticed the "whatever that is" across the street until you mentioned it!MorpheusPA wrote: ↑October 16th, 2020, 9:53 pmAnd even without it? Look across the street and tell me it already doesn't look ten thousand times better than...whatever that is.

Re: Grass identification and advice on next steps
In the aforementioned non-irrigated parts of my lawn, I had a large die off this year caused by drought. Then last week, raccoons or skunks tore that part of the lawn to shreds. I have a game camera on this and the lawn looked like a bulldozer went over it overnight. Did the game camera catch a pic...

Congratulations, this looks beautiful. Thanks! It really photographs better than it looks in person. Looks really good! You guys do a great job documenting your renovation. It really helps others see what it takes to do a renovation. Thanks, gryd. Your renovations in the past were a big motivator f...

Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation - 2020-10-14 - Reno Day 49 Photo Update
This afternoon, we both had an opportunity to work on the lawn together, so Nancy donned the backpack blower and Ken pushed the mower. It was an awesome autumn afternoon for being outdoors and enjoying some fresh air! The pics look a lot better than usual. I generally wait until late in the day to t...

Re: Stack316 half backyard renovation 2020
Hmm. I'm guessing that something may have been sitting there on top of the grass which caused that damage. But what, I have no idea. Hoping somebody else can ID it... and looking forward to having you tell us eventually if nobody manages to guess correctly... Lost power, and set up my generator on ...

Re: How much fertilizer should I put down now
WOW, I was wrong the whole time. I wasn't aware there is an ideal limit of N we should put during spring time. Thanks a lot! One more thing to mention, though, is that all of these recommendations, and guidelines, and schedules, and plans are not set in stone. There are ranges of good / better / be...

Re: How much fertilizer should I put down now
Well, whether or not Plan A works depends upon the type of nitrogen fertilizer applied. However, if the slow-release fertilizer you apply takes 3 months to release, and the release is linear, [Plan A] would be like Plan D below: ++++++ Plan D +++++++ April - 1.0lb of N per 1000 sqft May - 1.0lb of ...
