Re: [HELP] - Post New Lawn Starter Guide (7A)
Aside from the difficulty of keeping new grass alive over summer, the plan looks generally good. I like the tenacity for weed control during seeding. You will need to water the same in the spring as in the fall to get the grass to germinate. You want to keep everything watered, but not puddling unti...

Ouch. I feel for you. I had a tarp on my office roof for three months waiting for the roofer.

Re: BLSC - u gotta be kidding me!
I always put down a fresh dose of pre-emergent any time some utility or construction contractor digs on or near my lawn. I always ask them not to seed. 75% of the time they seed with crap seed full of coarse looking fescue, annual rye and other undesirables. I actually had one of them come back 2 we...

Re: Deep freeze and pre emergent
Umm... pre-em of any kind is useless when the ground is frozen. Nothing will germinate. The pre-em will just sit on top of the frozen soil waiting to be washed or blown away. Wait for it to warm up. Even though the 101 forum is geared to all turf types, I don't see a lot of the warm season members o...

Re: Can we talk about Fall Fungus?
New turf, unhealthy turf or turf grown in borderline environments (e.g. too much shade) is especially susceptible to PM and Rust. The best method for preventing disease non-chemically is to have healthy turf and good preventive regimen. Once that fails, then you are behind the curve. Another non-che...

Re: JG LI's new house seeding...
I would love to zone all of our bedrooms separately, but I am still living with decisions of previous owners. One of the downsides of a 100+ year old house is that it gets very expensive to add in all the newest tech. It is getting better with stronger, more reliable wireless, but plaster walls and ...

I watched the snow and leaves blow around in the wind. And admired the new patio that is partially in, but delayed by the cold.

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?
I did not get a winterizer app down this year (or last year). The window happened while I was away on vacation. Temps were in the 30s-40s and the grass was still growning. Then the cold snap hit and it plummeted to almost zero. By the time I got back from skiing (the snow was crap), the ground in mu...

Re: Backflow Valve Protection?
The safest course would be to blow out the irrigation before freezing and use a hose and sprinkler if you need to water after that. I generally just time my winterizer to happen before rain. If it doesn't rain, I'll drag out the hose an sprinklers. That being said, your backflow won't freeze during ...

I don't do a weekly Urea Program. I do Milorganite at 1.2 lbs Nitrogen/M every two weeks and don't stress it if I miss an application. I try to get in at least three fall applications (I can usually get in 4). This year I only got two in because of other stuff (the lawn got relatively neglected in g...

Re: Watering after disease?
I deal with a lot of disease issues in St. Louis, though not on new turf so much. In my experience, you want to help the turf recover while treating. I tend to err on the side of too much rather than too little water, even with foliar diseases (like pythium). Ultimately, as Marine says, the seed won...

Re: How 'bout it Transition zone?
Fall in the transition can be crazy for the grass. I think it is also particularly tough. The soil and air temps stay a touch too high for good growth and spreading when the days are still long. Once the air and soil temps drop, though, the days are short and the grass begins to get starved for ligh...

New member here, thank you all very much for all the info. I am in a unique situation out here in California. What would you recommend for me in zip 94062? Re: White fungus on dirt
If you applied Headway one week ago, you don't need any fungicides. Headway is about as broad spectrum as it comes. It is worth pointing out as well that the Headway clearly didn't kill all the fungi in your soil, though it may have reduced the competition allowing whatever you currently have to thr...

Re: Light, frequent vs deep, infrequent watering
Turf stress is one of the biggest factors in the development of disease, in my opinion. Having too much or too frequent water (as long as it isn't truly excessive) is better than too little or too frequent. The overwatered grass at the edge of STL's reno is a good example. I certainly move to more f...

Re: Mow to 1 1/2 inch for overseed? Really?
You might scalp. The lower you mow, the better chance the new seed will establish and not get crowded out by the old turf. Of course, dead areas are dead and there isn't any competition so that takes care of that problem. You also can't kill the turf any deader by mowing lower. In the end, I wouldn'...

Another option is to mow with a reel type mower. They do not have any suction to pull up new seedlings. All you have to worry about is what you crush with your feet and the wheels.

Re: Milorganite in addition to aeration and overseeding?
I did PGR + Milo + starter with Meso. This is probably the way to overseed if you have the time and are willing to put in the effort. The PGR stunts the growth of the old turf, the Mesotrione prevents weeds and the fertilizer is there for the turf. You can make an argument for changing the fertiliz...

That sounds reasonable. You may not get the soil test results back in time to make any real amendments, but you can get started. Make sure you note that you are overseeding when you post your soil test for interpretation. Make sure you follow the instructions on soil testing here: https://aroundthey...
