Re: Lawn disaster

Like Northeastlawn, I am also a fan of Lesco Double Eagle Perennial Rye. The only problem I had with it is winter kill. It does not like the Syracuse winters. But your climate should be more mild. It establishes quickly and looks really good. Last year I renovated most of my lawn to KBG and I will d...

Re: Lawn disaster

When you say you used "round up for lawns" do you mean Weed b Gone? Round up will kill everything. Weed b Gone will kill most common weeds, though not crab grass. And Tenacity ... unless you used the correct dose and applied it at the right rate, that'll kill a lot of good grass too. Tenacity also d...

Re: I don't deserve a lawn

Until you figure out what's killing the grass, I wouldn't put anything down. It could be drought, insect or disease. Or it could be the result of applying the mushroom compost. Maybe post some pics and then get a soil test of a dead spot and another of a healthy spot? Have you done the screwdriver t...

I had good luck hand pulling nutsedge in a newly seeded area. But it depends how much you have and how strong your back is.

Dig one of them up (don't pull it) and tell us if it has a little bulb/nutlet just below the soil level. Then roll the lowest part of the stem with your fingers and see if it feels triangular. Post the answers.
Yea, my guess is a sedge.

Sounds like a good plan - good luck. I will be renovating 4K sqft in my backyard this year and I will follow the same schedule.

Re: Lawn Forums

FWIW, overall traffic to the site is roughly the same. What has changed is we had a handful of members who created scores of sock puppet accounts. They were posting from all of them. At its worst, we had threads where multiple sock puppet accounts were all attacking one legit user. We’ve cleaned a ...

Re: Lawn Forums

My profile says that I joined in 2010. I remember somebody inviting me here from Garden Web but I don't remember who and I don't remember how far along this site was when I joined. I do remember Bestlawn (the person) encouraging me to do a renovation and I remember thinking "you want me to kill off ...

Re: Lawn Forums

I have been the resident lawn nut in each of the 5 neighborhoods that I have lived in. And my lawn is always the nicest. Everything I know about lawns I learned here. It is amazing how many neighbors will look at a beautiful lawn, ask the owner for advice and then go to the hardware store and be per...

I have been spot spraying my crabgrass with tenacity and I would say that 20% has been killed off, 20% showed whitening and then recovered and 60% showed no ill effects.

Here's mine. This is 11 mos old kbg. I'd say that some of those roots are 18" long. But I wonder if some of them went horizontally rather than down.

Re: Fescue Lawn Care | Northern VA

It's always possible that there is more than one thing going on. But there is consensus that you have a fungus. Maybe it will resolve itself and maybe it wont. Treating the fungus will cost a few dollars and take some time but it wont hurt anything. Not treating it might turn out fine, or you could ...

Re: new fescue mix sod

I think it's really hard to give an answer with # of times a day and for how long because there are so many variables. But I would think that you want to soak the soil down past whatever depth your roots are at. I think you want to encourage those roots to go deep. I guess the only way to know wheth...

Re: Help with lawn issue please!

My perennial rye grass does that regardless of how much water it gets. So I don't think it is dying because of lack of water. I think it's just the natural life cycle of that stalk - it likely held seeds earlier in the year, or it would have if you had stopped moving it. Having said that ... the ide...

Re: Fescue Lawn Care | Northern VA

Do you think that there is anyway that this grass is just dormant v.s. disease? Dormant grass doesn't have lesions. You might have some grass that's dormant but I think you also have disease. Maybe you can leave it alone and it will clear up on its own. Or maybe it will leave you with big dead spot...

Re: Fescue Lawn Care | Northern VA

How much lawn do you have? Rather than order it on line, I would find a Site One in VA and go pick it up. If you only have a few thousand square feet of lawn, you will want to use a 1 or 2 gallon pump sprayer. If you have much more than that you may want to explore a 4 gallon backpack sprayer. Site ...

Re: Fescue Lawn Care | Northern VA

The health blades looks great but the unhealthy blades seem to have lesions on them suggesting disease. Someone with more experience than me will have to weigh in but my bet is disease. My new KBG caught a little something last fall but a fungicide knocked it out and now I apply Serenade fungicide a...

Re: Fescue Lawn Care | Northern VA

That sounds like a lot of water. You want the roots to dig deep in search of that moisture. You dont want to promote a shallow root system. Maybe start extending your watering to every 3rd day while watching for signs of stress? The other problem with too much water is it promotes disease. I dont kn...
