Re: Proactive Very Late Fall Gypsum

I'm going to take a chance and write a posting about using Gypsum as a very-late Fall proactive treatment for road-salt damage to lawns. This is a treatment that should only be used in situations where the potential for damage exceeds the potential for making a mess of the soil chemistry. I'm intri...

Re: Help with Fall plan

Should I now apply Urea? If so is 2 lbs. per 1,000 sq. ft. the correct amount? I live in CT. The only real way to answer your question is with another question... The key question to determine when you should apply urea as a winterizer is whether or not your grass is still growing. If your lawn is ...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

Mowed the front and side lawns this afternoon. No appreciable growth since the prior cut 7 days ago. I even put the bag on the mower to see if I was getting any green in the bag -- examination of the bag found nearly all just mulched leaves. The only green I seemed to be getting was from week-old gr...

Re: How to get quick greenup for Thanksgiving

I'd do FAS or FS. You could probably spray FAS anytime between now and Thanksgiving and it won't grow out. +1 Thanksgiving is still a couple weeks away. You'd be better off reading up on and learning about how to make / spray FAS or FS, order what you need, and apply it before Thanksgiving (it will...

Re: How low and Iron application for fall?

Last year, in Manchester/Bedford, NH, we had continuous snow cover from December 7 through March 16, with the exception of an 8-day stretch in January (at the "official" weather station at Manchester Airport). Shady areas (like our yard) saw longer continuous snow cover -- we still had snow on our l...

Oh my. Can't say I'm looking forward to that. I've been enjoying this unseasonably warm fall with no freezing temperatures!

Re: What the Heck *is* This?

Can anyone help identify this tree? Pick up a fallen-off twig with a few leaves attached, and take a close-up photo of it against a uniform light-colored background (like a blank sheet of paper, or on the kitchen counter, or a slab of concrete sidewalk), and post that. Seeing the leaf will help a l...

Re: "No Frost" Starting To Cause Problems

I always thought of the east coast as much colder sooner than here but not necessarily so. It usually is, but this year has been unusual. (Aren't they all in some way? ;) ) Here in Southern NH, we just had our first real frost last night (the night of Nov 9 into Nov 10). This is really abnormally l...

Re: First frost tonight, Sept 10/14. Post when yours is.

This is pretty much unheard of here in Southern NH, but we had our first "killing frost" last night (the night of Nov 9 into Nov 10). This is really abnormally late -- our "average first frost" according to the tables at davesgarden is Sep 26. Nov 10 is the latest date in the table, with 90% likelih...

Re: Installation Considerations?

This guy uses all Rainbird equipment which i for some reason kept referring to as Rainman. :-) The system that is installed at our house is a mixed system. We have a Hunter Pro C12 controller w/rain sensor and mostly Hunter PGP rotors, but also have some Rainbird 3500 rotors. Our installer chose to...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

Mowed the lawn this morning before heading to work just to keep cutting it while it's still growing, although slowly now. Prior cut was 6 days ago in front; 5 days ago on the side. Definitely less than a half inch of growth everywhere; little to no discernible growth in some places. Thought about pu...

Appears to me (i'm a little rusty on reading this) - but appears that either it is almost entirely fast release (6% of the 32 is only 2%?) OR....6% slow release and 26% fast ??? That part of the labels has always frustrated the engineer in me, too. However, the percentage breakouts under the nitrog...

Re: My first post and my first lawn renovation!

Nice photo album and captions to document what you did -- well done! That last photo in the album looks pretty sweet! Looks like a massive improvement over "before" from what I could see of the lawn in the "here comes the tractor" photo. You've got a great neighbor to come and help with the tractor!

Re: KBG Pots-When to Start?

Along these same lines, something that I'm thinking of doing next year is using a section of yard as a "sod farm" in which sod that grows there would get transplanted into a higher-profile section of the lawn where the grass isn't doing well. I used the above approach in an unintended way this past ...
