Oil Changes
Just wondering what kind of oil you guys use? I've always used Mobil 1 10w30 but John Deere calls for their "turf guard" stuff. Anyone think it's wrong to switch out from the tractor brand?

Re: Time for a new mower
Yeah I hear you! My garage barely fits my snowblower let alone this machine with a blower attachment on the front!

Re: Time for a new mower
How many of you guys use cheaper, cross referenced oil filters vs paying the 40% more for the JD version?

Re: Time for a new mower
Yes, seems to be a great machine. I think the k58 is the best you can get before you get really serious into one but for my use its probably overkill, which i like :) I can see how the 42" would be a little rough on the edging stuff since it probably doesn't stick out much. I'm glad you say it has a...

Re: Time for a new mower
I might pull them up one notch because they are close to the ground......that's about 1/2".
I saw the leveling thing under the seat but need to see how it works. I put the level on the deck and it was dead on left to right but a small frontward slope back to front.

Re: Pennington Seed (at HD) now 50% coating
I think they both have their uses. If you're going to do a full reno and slice seed it in and water 3x per day then just seed is the best option. If you're going to throw it down and "let mother nature do its thing" then the coating may/could/should help. These are just examples but I think show how...

Re: Time for a new mower
Question on setting the anti-scalp wheels. i set the deck to 3.5" and then i dropped the AS wheels to the ground and then pulled them up a little until the latch caught. So the way they are now is that they are very close to the ground but shouldn't make the deck ride higher than the 3.5" setting. S...

Re: Time for a new mower
Thanks Pete! It's in the garage now and I plan to get after it on my lunch break here. I need to familiarize myself with all of the features on this vs my D140. I'm really in awe at how different it is over my old one. Quiet, smooth, speed, power...... all improvements! I'm planning to do an initial...

Have you live at the house for a long time or are you new to it? Possible someone buried their dog there

Re: Fertilizer in NY- can't buy Lesco Dimensions.
I usually try to add any type of surfactant needing application 2 days post mowing this way the grass blades seal up and the weeds (most often target) have more time to absorb it before the next mow.

Re: Mowing Height
IIRC, the depth of the grass's roots are pretty reflective of the height of the top growth so a higher mowed grass should have a "better" root system.....this aligns nicely with the infrequent/deep watering recommendation. 3"-4" is really where you should be targeting and cutting when you are taking...

Re: No Peeing Signs?
Thanks guys - I'm more OK with the poop than I am the peeing because i just pick up the poop when i do my dogs weekly droppings so no biggie - I just think its rude. The peeing is what gets me and as a dog owner, I know its tough to do anything about it when fido stops to water.......so that's why I...

I'd post this (as well) over in the soil test forum so it can get on the radar of ST6.icemanxp300 wrote: ↑April 20th, 2017, 8:28 amDoes anyone see a reason why I should not put this lock-up that I purchased down?

No Peeing Signs?
So when I work from home on Fridays, I see a lot of people walking their dog in front of my house.....its a nice neighborhood and a nice walk so I get it. The downside is that I sometimes see their dogs pee in my lawn and I want to go nuts and I also find dog poop on the edges too......i know the di...

Agreed, I'm in for $10 a bag........its right next to the John Deere dealer so it gives me a reason to go there as well!GeorgiaDad wrote: ↑April 19th, 2017, 2:12 pmYeah, $15 a bag is high. I wait for my local Tractor Supply to run a special on it. ~$10-$11, then load up.

Re: Cost vs variety?
Thanks Morph - I was leaning that way as well but if i can get the cost of the alfalfa down i'd still like to do it at some point. $15 a bad for 40# is a little much for the way i'm using it. The baystate sure does stink though, thank goodness for some of this rain coming, hopefully it de-stinks my ...

Cost vs variety?
I was looking to put down some alfalfa pellets late summer but looking locally, I would cost me around $15 a bag which puts me at $250 for a full application. I can get a pallet (50 bags) of baystate fertilizer for $175. Is it worth it for the diversity of alfalfa to pay more and get less? I would g...
