Re: R2k 2024 Soil Test

I'm mildly surprised elemental sulfur worked that well, but you really didn't have far to go. I've see recommendations on another forum to add it to calcium pit soils with a pH of 8.2 and just shake my head. Good luck with that, but the same person recommends tossing aluminum sulfate around wholesal...

Re: New cool season turfgrass species: "TTRF"

Kinda ditto, and I'm unsure if this is a crossbreed or genetic insert. I'm trying genemod flowers this summer and I have modest hopes for them. If they work, wonderful.

Re: Early treatment for Winter weeds

Short answer: yes.

Long answer: yes, but the herbicide will take noticeably longer to work in cooler temperatures. I've already sprayed some in my lawn and gardens, but I'm not really expecting them to die until April.

Re: 71GTO 2024 soil test

I have fifteen minutes until my next meeting and I'm burned out. Congratulations, that means you win. :-) I don't have any major issues with this soil. Phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium are good. Sulfur's fine. I'd be OK with any organic feeding you wanted as Ocean Gro is kind of high in phosphorus...

Re: Chris's 2024 Soil Test

I'm late this year and had to work today to recert another system. It's been hectic. Sorry. I always read soil tests like they're your first (I do the same with mine; literally, what would I do if I were seeing this soil for the first time?) In your case, the answer is, "Develop a slight migraine an...

Re: Clemsonfan Winter 2024 Soil Test

We really only read Logan Labs soil tests (the reason is that we can't familiarize ourselves with every soil tests' accuracy, which is generally not that great, measurements, and range of recommendations terribly easily). But I don't mind taking a very general stab at it, with the realization that I...

Re: Wire-Free Robotic Mowers

Oh, they're not perfect, far from it. I'm not a personal fan of my Landroid, actually, and currently give it 2 1/2 stars. It strongly dislikes major issues like...smaller areas of thick grass, tiny bumps in the lawn. Corners. Typical for Germany, there's a German kit to add to the wheels that gives ...

Re: Wire-Free Robotic Mowers

They don't pattern predictably and even the wired ones have to be watched a bit (I work from home so not a problem). I've heard a bit of this and that about the GPS ones, some very good. Some not so good. They tend to have specific drop points where they seem to get lost and the patterning software ...

I'm awake, I'm awake. Assuming I don't go back into torpor again, that is.

Heads-up, though, my supervisor quit and I got promoted again, I'm now running the entire library and then some, so I have even less time than I did last year. Be ye forewarned.

Firefly Petunia

I admit it, this one got me. They've inserted glowing mushroom genes into petunias to create the Firefly petunia that glows in the dark. https://light.bio/ I've ordered two for the season. At $84 for two, that wasn't exactly cheap. Updates to follow. Sadly, reproduction at home is illegal, so it wou...

Re: TTTF Fertilizer & Pre Emergent Schedule

Yeah, sounds about right. With highs around sixty, it's just about flawless for grass. It'll want a feed about every six weeks or so at that temperature, assuming perfect watering (with the atmospheric river I hear you guys are getting, that should be relatively true). Most of the people I work with...

Yep, I've moved into 7b (no surprises there, I've been using that since about 2000 anyway).

Re: How Many Times Did You Mow?

Daily; the mower's out from 9 AM through 4 PM daily through the season, but it's a small robot that trims continuously. So technically, that works out to about 7 hours a day, 180 days a year.

Re: Using Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) to clean sprayer - questions

I was being a tad flippant about the drain, but for most stuff in your sprayer, it actually wouldn't be a problem if you rinsed it a few times outside with just water, then cleaned it. If you do it outside, I'd probably dilute at least six to one (six extra sprayers full of water to the one of the c...

Re: Using Sodium Carbonate (washing soda) to clean sprayer - questions

You're lucky I ducked in. Sodium carbonate is commonly called washing soda, as you noted, and sold in the laundry aisle of the grocery store. It's completely safe to use up to a cup at a time to clean out your sprayer. Dump it down the drain, the only thing that might happen is that your pipes will ...

Re: timing of top dress / overseeding in NC

Yes; keep it damp. The seed pre-germinates immediately (practically instantly in those temperatures) and germinates the first moment it can as temperatures drop. Which will probably happen around the third to fifth night. There's a reason I put seed on heaters that kick temperatures into the low to ...

Thee are late. Or getting there; the weather's going to slide fast. Do it ASAP because, will you, nil you, it still needs a solid sixty to ninety days to grow in before winter.

Re: Height of cut recommendations

Some can certainly be a matter of preference. I keep mine at maximum height all year long, but winter? What's a winter any longer? My grass still grows in winter, just extremely slowly. You might be a little cooler in terms of weather than I am, perhaps even with the occasional snowfall on the PA/MD...

Re: Small trees and herbicides

As a very general rule, 2,4-D is extremely safe even for very young trees as long as absolutely nothing gets on the leaves. Don't spray to runoff (most people use about five times more than needed). Don't spray on a windy day. And don't get it on the trunk, which can and does absorb chemicals, altho...
