Re: Boxwood question (wasn't sure where to post this)

Yes, you can cut back boxwoods as hard as you like and they'll regrow. Not that I'd cut them to six inches but...they'd probably manage. And good news, you can cut them right now just about anywhere in the US and Canada as long as they're not in drought (since it's a bit dry, just make sure to keep...

Re: Help with lawn issue please!

My backyard perennial rye lawn has a LOT of dead stalks left over from the spring "stalky stage" that PR goes through. It looks something like your lawn. This is one reason my PR is getting killed off in a few weeks and replaced with kbg. Ken-n-nancy's idea is a good one, so long as cutting it lower...

Re: Poor man's irrigation system?

I don’t think I ever thanked you, but this spring during the COVID lock down I installed 1’ poly pipe and fed it with my hose bib. The poly pipe was buried in my mulch bed and under my patio pavers, it waters 1,500sf. One zone runs 4 heads, the other 3 heads. It takes me 2hrs to put down 1/2“. The ...

Re: New faucet

I agree. I have Pex throughout the house and some unfinished areas in the basement. I added 3 new faucets and upgraded the two existing faucets from 1/2" to 3/4." One of the easier DIY projects I have ever done.

Re: Poor man's irrigation system?

No problem. None of it is hard but all together it's a chose. If you can dig a trench, turn a wrench and drive back and forth to the hardware store a million times you can do it. And it's really not that expensive. Half my expense was in implementing strategies that I ultimately abandoned. For examp...

Re: Pressure wash high spots

I think that's a really good idea. If it shaves down the high spots and allows to to rake the excess dirt into the low spots, it sounds good to me. It must have made a mess but sounds 100x easier than trying to do this with a shovel. I may try it myself when I reno my back yard next month.

Re: Lets see some dog pics

I posted this one of my paw patrol assistant earlier this week. Her name is 'out of my way dummy'. https://i.postimg.cc/FdpWwG0X/erosion-control-3.jpg I often wonder whether my dog watching me dig in the dirt, pull weeds, etc leads her to think it's ok to dig and to eat grass. When I yell at her sh...

Some pictures from this morning. You don't realize how good it looks when you can't see my neighbors. They are all brown. This kbg will turn one year old next month. https://i.postimg.cc/VSpn0mVm/20200711-090916.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/y3XZG9Y8/20200711-090937.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/YhFWZ50s/2020...

Re: Poor man's irrigation system?

Two of the heads in action plus a picture of the various hoses and fittings that connect the head to the timer. But some of the fitting on the timer side are missing because I don't have any laying around. https://i.postimg.cc/MvqRQsdM/20190803-190353.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/ZvhNjjmQ/20200711-08594...

Re: Poor man's irrigation system?

Someone asked me a question about my Frankenstein irrigation system on another thread and rather than hijack that thread, I thought I should update this one from last year. As background, this is a new house with about 12,000 sqft of lawn. It was built with 2 spigots. I planted a temporary lawn of P...

Re: Need guidance

I've used Sprinkler Warehouse (online) now for over a decade. I'd never go into HD or Lowes for sprinkler heads, valves, etc -- the selection and prices at Sprinkler Warehouse just put the bigbox stores to shame. Because I was cobbing something together I needed to be able to stand there with the p...

Lets see some dog pics

This is Lainey. She just turned 2. Her hobbies include ripping landscaping out of the ground and parading it around the yard, and invading personal space.

I also ignore the forecast. I set my system based on what my eyes are telling me about the lawn's needs.

Re: Need guidance

FWIW I found that Lowes has the best price on 1" poly pipe and fittings near me. But they don't sell sprinkler heads. Site One (was John Deere and Lesco) has it all but for more money. I did almost my entire project before discovering this.

Re: Grass identification and advice on next steps

"If I mulch leaves into the front lawn, will that obviate the need to topdress with compost?" I think the rule with OM is to do whatever you can based on budget/time/motivation. My OM percentage is a little over 5% and besides mulching I dont really add any additional OM. And I am very happy with th...
