Re: Bee ID?

Could very well be a honeybee, but could also be a carpenter bee. You really don't want carpenter bees excavating tunnels in the structural wood of your house.

Re: lawn help for a newbie

Hello all, and thanks in advance for any advice on how I can improve my lawn. ... First off, welcome to the ATY/BL site -- you'll find there are some very experienced lawn-care homeowners / hobbyists here that have fabulous lawns. (Then, there's people like me that are still learning...) ... We're ...

I just watched this, and honestly don't know if it was intended to be serious, funny, or realistic.

Maybe that's what makes it funny?

Has the color returned to normal in the past 10 days, or is it still a bright green?

Re: PanhandleID's Soil Test 2015

That looks like a great soil test, really only indicating a need for potassium (any SOP left over from last year?) but I have no idea how to interpret the "saturated paste" test. The standard test indicates that you could use a significant amount of supplementary potassium, but the saturated paste t...

I'm curious about this, too - would spraying prodiamine onto areas of crushed rock help keep weeds from sprouting in crushed rock areas?

Re: Snow Mold Damage - Help - Pre-Em? or Seed?

Thanks for all the additional encouragement -- got prodiamine down on about half of the desired area yesterday (too many things to do and not enough time!) but plan to get the rest treated today. If it just takes a few extra weeks for those areas to recover, that will still be a lot better than over...

Re: ericg's Backyard Reno 2014 - NJ (TTTF/KBG) - 2015 Season

If you don't mind me asking, where'd you get the soil sampler from? I looked around and saw one that was pretty expensive, so I just went with a shovel this year. Stephen, the tool eric used isn't cheap, but it makes collecting the 1" sample from 3 to 4 inches a piece of cake. I look at the tool as...

Re: Gryd's 2014 Front Yard Renovation Take 2

I'll get some pics up soon. Lawn survived the winter fine. I'm looking forward to seeing some pics. Our lawn took so much snow mold damage, I was thinking of your renovation and hoping it survived well. Sorry to hear that your health isn't doing as well. However, having a diagnosis will help a lot,...

I see that in the report compared to 2013, the desired values of Exchangable Cations are lower. Is that a function of the depth or is it due to some new guidelines or may be the unit is different? One of the ST6 experts will need to weigh in for a more definitive answer. However, I'll give this a g...

Re: Snow Mold Damage - Help - Pre-Em? or Seed?

Thanks for the advice, everyone! Based upon your recommendations, I've decided to go ahead and apply a pre-emergent (prodiamine in my case) to ward off the crabgrass and hope for the best with the grass surviving in the dead spots (or at least spreading back into those areas). I had planned to get i...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

For Saturday, 2 May 2015: Collected soil samples and sent them in to Logan Labs for testing. Played "pick up sticks" -- still quite a few twigs left, though. (The downside of so many trees!) Planned to spread prodiamine to prevent crabgrass, but only got as far as calibrating the sprayer. Found that...

Re: Snow Mold Damage - Help - Pre-Em? or Seed?

I'd rake up that thatch though. That "thatch" is what used to be the grass in those areas! I've been reluctant to vigorously rake it up for fear of ripping out the roots in case there's hope of it coming back. Maybe I should just go for it with the thought that if it doesn't survive the raking it d...

When I read Andy's post, my first thought was, "Gosh, what a way to welcome a newbie to the site -- telling him that all he can grow is poison ivy!" My second thought was, "That's not like Andy -- he is usually very welcoming to new site members, I wonder what's going on?" I then searched for Slyder...

Re: Snow Mold Damage - Help - Pre-Em? or Seed?

Has the forsythia even bloomed yet? If not you don't even have to make a decision yet. The forsythia first started blooming a little over a week ago here, but I was still finishing up my winter hobby of FIRST Robotics and couldn't have applied a pre-emergent any sooner. By just now taking a walk al...

Snow Mold Damage - Help - Pre-Em? or Seed?

It's been a long winter here in Southern New Hampshire. Winter came late, but stayed even later! With winter's departure, I have experienced the worst snow mold I've ever seen in my yard, and I could use some advice. Please read on to get the back-story, lots of photos, and provide your advice in my...
