Re: Oh, Boy!! (Nor'easter)
Power was restored at our house today, so we were able to disconnect and return the generator. So thankful that we were able to borrow a generator instead of having to drain the pipes in our house! Having to go without electrical power for a few days has helped us be thankful this Thanksgiving of so...

Re: Oh, Boy!! (Nor'easter)
Still waiting for electrical power to be restored at our house. Thanks to a borrowed generator from friends at our church, our home is warming up again! Bottomed out at 46F today (was 14F here overnight) and climbing again now, thanks to the generator to power the oil burner! Don't think our pipes ...

Re: Oh, Boy!! (Nor'easter)
Still waiting for electrical power to be restored at our house. Lost power at 7pm on Wednesday night. Moved the Thanksgiving celebration to my son's apartment, where we had a nice dinner. Got back home last night to find the power is still out. Down to 52F in the house this morning (Friday). Really ...

Re: Latest time to put down winter fertilizer
So the short answer is not to use it? I am a novice. Yes, the short answer is not to use the 18-0-18 fertilizer now in Massachusetts. It would be fine to apply in late May. For a "winterizer" app this late in the season, you would be better off using urea (46-0-0) at no more than 2# of product per ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014
I have a Honda HRX ... It [mulches] well enough that the pieces are between fingernail size and coffee-ground size. Seems like when it wears out, I should think about replacing my basic mower with something better. My problem is that I really want a basic push mower without any extra systems that m...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
Made the last planned application of anything to the lawn this year -- 60 pounds of Pennington calcitic lime down on 6700 sq feet in the front, for 9#/K of product. The lime was listed as 36% Ca, so that is 3.2#Ca/1Ksqft. Also placed reflective snow stakes along the road, in an attempt to encourage ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014
Today, I put down 60# of Pennington calcitic lime down on 6700 sq feet in the front, for 9#/K of product. The lime was listed as 36% Ca, so that is 3.2#Ca/1Ksqft. This is the last planned application of anything to the lawn this year. Snow in the forecast for tomorrow, but it's still just a forecast...

Re: oze Soil Test Results: Fall, 2014
First off, an interesting story. Seems like your biggest issue is drainage! I guess that in some ways I'm blessed to have a very sandy soil -- reduces drainage issues, although it makes it hard for the soil to hold onto nutrients. The photos of the lawn look awesome compared to where you started whe...

Re: Urea Drop - arghhhh!
On Long Island you have missed your legal window. The next thing you will be applying is ice melt. I must confess it took me a while to figure out what you were saying here. Now I get it. Glad to hear that urea is effective as an ice melt preventative for the Thanksgiving day football game on the l...

... but the only problem I couldn't solve was around the edges of the yard where divots were made from performing 180 deg turns with my push mower. Just after the peak of the season in early July, I started to see divots in the shady sections from the turning action of the wheels and it just contin...

One note of concern: I added cracked corn to the yard at 10 lbs/k and then found a HUGE grub in the grass. :) I've found that kind of grub has a huge beneficial effect upon the yard and your general well-being. There will be some times when the grub causes trouble beyond what you can imagine, but i...

I don't suppose there's a "Bewitched SLT"?

We have a warm spell in the 50-60 range coming up in a week, followed by rain. I'm hoping to get most of the remainder of this season's work done then. You get a forecast there in Indiana that is good enough to predict rain a week in advance? In New England, rain forecasts more than about 3 days ou...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
Woke up this morning to gentle rain having just switched over from sleet. Decided it was a safe time to get the "winterizer" urea down. Used a bungee cord to strap some clear plastic on the drop spreader as a cover and went out and spread urea in the 34F rain. Normally I put fertilizer down in two p...
