Re: Oak tree in Yard
I have the same issue and have been dealing with it all year. I mow at around 3.5 inches and it would cut the leaves off some, but most of them were still intact. I ended up getting sick of looking at them so my wife and I sat in the yard for a couple hours and hand pulled a bunch. Two weeks later a...

Will pesticides and herbicides interfere
I was thinking about having a professional service (mosquito squad) come and spray my yard for mosquitos. I don't know for sure, but I believe it is a foliar application. I just sprayed triclopyr on about a quarter of my lawn yesterday. Will these interfere with each other? I'm mainly concerned if i...

Re: Alternative controls for dollar spot
Interesting timing since I just made a post about a few spots you thought were potentially early indicators of dollar spot. The only thing that the lawn has received is milorganite and a lot of rain. If I understand correctly, milorganite's iron is ferrous sulfate? The spots seem to be disappearing ...

Re: Problem Area Identification. Disease..stress?
I'll keep an eye on it, but I checked on it again today and it appears to be gone. I just took a peak from my deck when I had a minute, but I am going to take a closer look tonight and mow. I'm sure there is still some sign of whatever it is, but it looks like it is fading or gone. The only thing th...

Problem Area Identification. Disease..stress?
Hi guys, I have a few patches in my lawn that look like this. We have had a ton of rain lately so I am guessing it's a fungus of some type, but I have had trouble identifying these. I couldn't clearly identify it based on images around the web. If anyone can identify it, my next question would be. W...

Re: Good Grass or Bad Grass?
Thanks Green, yeah I'm not too worried about the subtype. I just want to make sure I'm not dealing with poa trivialis. I've searched around on Google and here and it doesn't seem to have those characteristics, but I haven't ever actually positively identified triv before. The color never seems to st...

I am guessings it's a fine fescue, although I have no idea what kind. It seems to be growing in bunchs and the color matches...

Re: Herbicides to kill maple seedlings
I hope no one minds me bringing an old thread to life, but I have been trying to deal with thousands of oak tree saplings and they're just not dying. I cut around 3 inches high and it doesnt cut most of them. I dropped it to 2.5 inches just to try and get more, but it's still not cutting it. I tried...

Re: Do another test this year or wait until next year?
Thanks Andy, yeah I didn't realize they were so different. They didn't give me all the micro nutrients I was hoping for anyway. I will go ahead and post my test in a new thread if I get one this year from Logan Labs.

Do another test this year or wait until next year?
Hey guys, Right before I joined the forum I went to a local lab and got a soil test for my lawn. Since then, i have put down an application of synthetic fert and an application of milorganite. All I really understood from the test was the ph, but the rest seemed to contradict itself. i.e. graphs sho...

Re: Tell us about your experiences helping neighbors
I was lucky enough to have a neighbor who kept a very nice lawn in our first home. I was able to learn a lot from him, but it also made me want to have a nice lawn too. It took me 6 years, but i transformed a crap lawn into something i was proud of. If it wasn't for my neighbor, I'm not sure if I wo...

Re: Options for Grassy Weeds
Thanks everyone for your help. I will either go ahead and try Certainty or paint the individual blades. Also, here is a new shot of a more mature plant i found in my flower bed. This one has more apparent clasping auricles. I have seen some smaller quackgrass with clasping auricles more pronounced t...

Re: Options for Grassy Weeds
Were you trying to show clasping auricles in this last pic or the absence of? I don't see any clasping auricles in this pic. Quackgrass has unmistakable clasping auricles. It also supposedly has a very short membranous ligule. I wouldn't call those ligules short. Well, I was showing that this one d...

Re: Options for Grassy Weeds
Do you know if certainty is okay on a northern mix? Mainly kbg, but perennial rye and probably some fine fescue too. I have read around the forum some and some guys said they think it works, but didn't see anyone that has actually tried it. Im sure someone has, but I didn't find it. I see that it us...

Re: Options for Grassy Weeds
This has been my problem with identification. The clasping auricles are sometimes present, but they dont always appear to be on this weed. Im still convinced its quackgrass though since it has all the other characteristics, including rhizomes and sometimes small clasping auricles are present. Does a...

Re: Tell us about your experiences helping neighbors
I have a neighbor that has a pull behind thatcher he bought. Lawn is sparse grass and tons of weeds. Zero hope to tell him it’s making things worse. I've used a pull behind "dethatcher" (the rake kind) on my lawn every spring for the last few years. Before that, in my first home I would rake by han...

Options for Grassy Weeds
Hey everyone, What recommendations are there for grassy weeds? My lawn is pretty weed free except a handful of areas with what I believe to be quackgrass. I will probably be posting pictures in the weed identification thread to see if anyone knows or sure. But, it likely doesn't matter since the onl...
