Re: Bazil’s 2022 Lawn Renovation

KBG really is a miracle grass as far as spreading and filling in. Givens being proper nutrition, sun etc. If you did a soil test and are following the plan you will be amazed by June 1st next year.

Re: Babe Ruth Baseball Field. 80K

Haha.. I'm sure it could be a job for life. I've been push mowing the in field twice a week. Today I wandered around with my back pack sprayer loaded with triclopyr. I couldn't hardly find any thing to spray, other than Poa Trivialis. I'd like to do a highlite spray with Tenacity and see how much is...

Re: Trouble with KBG on Long Island, NY

I just took a quick glance at the soil test. If it is accurate and who knows? It is showing low levels of Potassium and Boron. Both important nutrients in turf growth and health. If it was me, I'd get the Logan test now, and then you can have your nutrition plan in place for when spring hits.

Re: Trouble with KBG on Long Island, NY

I would suggest doing a 'mental reset'. There are those on this board well capable of correcting me if I'm wrong here. Next year don't apply any nitrogen until aproximately May 30th. I know this goes against marketing and practice that you might see elsewhere. By spiking the turf in early to mid spr...

Re: Babe Ruth Baseball Field. 80K

To anyone reading this. Three years ago I knew nothing about turf grass management. There are great people with archives of great advice on this site. Some of the other lawn sites really aren't administered and a lot of crazy stuff gets posted, repeated and passed around.

Re: Trouble with KBG on Long Island, NY

I would suggest getting a soil test done. Logan Labs is the only lab used on this site. Without a soil test you don't know what you are battling. How much nitrogen did you apply April -August? The solution to your issues probably isn't resolved through more grass seed.

Re: Babe Ruth Baseball Field. 80K

They had a night game last night. I took this picture about 6;30pm. The colors are pretty close to how the grass looks right now. We got four inches of rain in the last week, and that really perked things up. The miracle of fall applied urea and Triclopyr generated lots of compliments. The umps said...

Re: Raking prior to dormant overseeding

My experience was that seed wouldn't work down and germinate through the thatch. I had to use an aerater to punch through. Then dormant seeded and got great results.

$6 a pound is pretty pricey. If it is just for a few years , Ford and Sons can fix you up a sports field KBG, Rye, Fescue blend for under $4.00.

Re: How much pine bedding pellets to prime for leaf mulching?

Sawdust and wood shavings are way underrated. I have a theory that they work there way down to the soil surface where they serve as a micro mulch keeping the soil surface cooler and allowing less evaporation. I have access to tons of sawdust and would be applying much more if I had time. It does ama...

Re: Scott's Sun and Shade Mixture

My two cents is that you need to decide what kind of turf you desire. Neither creeping red fescue nor the perennial Rye, which are 50% of the blend drought resistant. They will both go dormant and look like they dried up. So to me ,they are 'filler' or an extender in the bluegrass mix. The blue gras...

Re: 2021: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

I went out in the dark a little bit ago to drop some urea. I saw that there is a 50% chance of rain at 3am. A fanatical person would have done it at 3am in the rain.

What triggers the rust? I'm having a few flareups, also near or in tree shade.

It's crazy. I see you guys out east are getting slammed with rain. Parts of Northern Illinois are extremely dry. Here, its been a month with no rain. Chance the next two days.
