Even though it is still early in the day, it's time for a... COCKTAIL!!!! :clapping: :clapping: :clapping: OK, PJD - you said that you have roughly 7,000 sq ft of lawn. That's what we're going to use for our calculations. You're going on a hunting expedition. You won't find all of the things that yo...

Re: Long Island, NY - New to Bestlawn
How often do are you supposed to put down lime? I was thinking once every 3 years. How often do you put oil into your car? You do it according to the need, not according to a calendar. "The need" is determined by a soil test, which tells you how far you are from the optimal pH zone. Adding Lime acc...

Re: cracked corn
Yup. I used cracked corn in very late March (33 lbs/1000) and it turned white too. Four weeks later I put down SBM, and the cracked corn was still on the soil in spots. Its not a problem.

Dig one up and see if there is a bulb on the bottom, too. Or the remains of a piece of corn (seriously).

Do us a favor and put a quarter next to it in the picture. It's hard to figure the size of it.
BTW, did you happen to use cracked corn this year?
And dude, sharpen the mower blade.

Re: Maintenance Program
Can I use Weed B Gone on the whole lawn? Meaning will it kill my fescue? And spray is better than a granular? Yes, you can do it on the entire lawn if its too much for spot treatments. No, it should not hurt the TTTF. Check the label of what's being sold in your area as formulations differ from the...

Re: Maintenance Program
Very few of us recommend weed-and-feed products. A good approach is to fertilize, and wait for everything to get to it's maximum growth spurt from the fertilizer (about two weeks) and then nail the weeds when they are growing like, er, weeds. They don't know what hit them. I like to add a bit of dis...

Re: Long Island, NY - New to Bestlawn
I wonder if my local extension will give me a good reading. Has anyone ever sent their sample into the Cornell Cooperative Extension? Are there places that give a nice amount of info that would be most useful to my needs? I look at and review over 100 soil tests a year, and Cornell and UMASS are my...

Oh, Cactus - you are FAR from alone.... My winter hobby is the raising/breeding of high-end Discus and Show Angelfish in large, planted aquariums. These aquariums require that 400 watts of lighting and 600W of heat be used. As you get into rarer plants, the lighting demands go up and up. I decided t...

Hi, Friz!!! Where are you on the Island? South Shore I know, but where? I grew up in Uniondale, and currently do the summer thing in South Jamesport. The balance of the year is the lower Hudson Valley. God, I miss that soil from Long island. You folks don't even know what rocks are (alright, a few N...

Re: New KBG dying off?
Hi, Gordon - and welcome! Yeah, and we've got three more days of rain to go! We got a two-hour break in the rain and I ran outside to manually reel-mow (on a wet slope) before it gets too lonf to reel-mow. It's grown 1-1/4" inches since Saturday! I'd suggest you try a bit of liquid Iron as a test. I...

Re: cracked corn
Cracked Corn is much genter than SBM. On SBM, I mowed on Saturday and we've had three days of light, steady rain. I can almost watch the grass growing. Everything grows though - I have Poa seeding that looks like wheat stalks, and a few wild violets that have grown to the size of watermelons (alrigh...

Re: cracked corn
I had none of it sprout, but I have heard of people that have had it sprout. The corn cannot survive a single mowing, so think of it as more organic matter returned to the soil.

Oh, I believe you. The KBG in Arizona also checked out as appropriate (Alt: 5,000 ft, good temp range). It's just that we all have ones that make us jump a bit at first. That's why I asked about other people's local experiences. And it's why I stick to the Dirt most of the time.

Re: Fine Fescue With Mag 3 Blend
Hi, TJ - and welcome! I did a renovation last summer/fall and added 30% Oxford Hard Fescue to a mix of America and Moonlight. The idea was that I would let the grasses struggle it out - the HF would have the advantage where the shade dominated and the KBG would crowd out the HF in the sunnier areas....

Anyone else wonder what happened to GENOD after all the activity on this thread? I just heard (via PM) that Geno and wife are now the proud parents of a pair of twins! I wish he'd get his priorities right, though, and deal with the four acres of weeds. Geno, get to it, Dude! Its not like the twins a...
