Re: CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
OK, got it. Any reason I can't order now if I don't intend to use it until next year? They're just chemicals and I assume they don't go bad.

Re: CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
I think I'll try the half app winterizer now and another half in 2 weeks. What type of synthetic should I go with? Pennington, Scott's and Vigoro are in the big box stores and I have a Lesco nearby. Is there any reason not to go with Starter fertilizer as my winterizer and get a jump on the phosphor...

Re: CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
Thanks again for your time Morpheus. It is, but that would be difficult for a large company to do. They'd have to produce many different types of fertilizer--and the homeowner would have to know what soil they have. Not going to happen. Yeah, I guess I was thinking being informed home owners but I g...

Re: CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
Thanks everyone! I find it amazing how average home owners blindly follow lawn step programs without knowing these kinds of details. How the lawn absorbs what you feed it would seem quite important. Cactus, Got it. So the plan next year is OM and a lot of it. My local Agway sells cornmeal for about ...

Re: CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
Thanks Morpheus. I'm assuming the sulfate of potash is for an increase in K. Is there a reason you'd go with starter fertilizer instead of triple phosphate for P (assuming I can find it) and tons of organics for N since I'm trying to stick organic? Is there anything that will help increase the CEC o...

CVette's Soil Test Results 2010
Hi all, I’ve got my UMass soil test and I’m quite disappointed in the OM. I guess I should have expected it with only two years of organics (4-5 apps/yr, 20lbs/1000/app) and many years of synthetic fertilizers by myself and the previous home owner. Any suggestions besides lime and organics? What’s t...

Quick Soil Test Question
Hi all, I have a quick question. I extracted my soil for a soil test on September 25th. I dried it but then I never had a chance to mail it before I had to leave town on business. It has remained in my garage for over a week. I want to perform the Standard Soil Test w/ Organic Matter at UMass. Does ...

Re: CVette's Backyard Expansion
Awesome. Thanks everyone. The blower worked well so no need to step on the little guys just yet.

Re: CVette's Backyard Expansion
Nope, I only used Starter fertilizer. But since I was short on time I didn't get a soil test for the new area I had just cleared, so I have no idea of the balance. I plan to get one soon. I guess I won't worry about the white stuff unless it gets prevalent.

Re: CVette's Backyard Expansion
Well, it's been about 2.5 weeks and my green fuzz is about 1" tall now. Here's how it looks. Should I try to clear some leaves by walking on it? Or maybe try the blower? I didn't water yesterday because it rained the day before but I don't want to water with that many leaves on the ground. I'm water...

Re: CVette's Backyard Expansion
Hi Andy, Thanks. I saw your location the other day. I grew up in Northern Westchester so am pretty familiar with the Thruway and Taconic routes between here and there. My knowledge on the Central Valley is limited to the Thruway, 84, Woodbury Commons and rt6 through Bear Mountain. Are you near there...

CVette's Backyard Expansion
This post is to ask questions and track my backyard expansion progress. If this project goes well I hope to renovate the rest of the front and back yard in stages in the future (15-20,000 sqft total). Most of this new area and the rest of the yard gets 4 hours of sun or more. The areas that get less...

Re: Hi and KBG seed recommendations
Ah, I see. I did this 2 years ago so those 2008 trials weren't out. Sounds great. I'll go with the even mix of NuGlade/Bedazzled/Bewitched. Thanks so much for your help.

Re: Hi and KBG seed recommendations
Thanks everyone. I was using the ratings at seedsuperstore.com for some of my research and here it shows Nuglade as only a fair tolerance to shade . Compared to Award, which rated good for shade tolerance . Thanks for the blend Bestlawn. I don't know if I have poa annua. My current lawn is the origi...

Re: Hi and KBG seed recommendations
Hi Bestlawn, I have specifically battled red thread and anthracnose multiple times, so I'd be shooting for resistance to these. It would be nice to have the same blend for the entire lawn but I suppose it is not important since the entire lawn renovation is desired but not planned for the near futur...

Hi and KBG seed recommendations
Hi all, I'm clearing some brush in our backyard to extend it and want to plant elite KBG in the approx 20'x70' area. About two years ago I was researching cultivars and planning a renovation. I'm still holding off on the renovation since the front and back yards are about 15,000sqft total and it wil...
