Re: New lawn w/ issues

+1 Andy. The yellowing could be a nitrogen or iron shortage, it's hard to tell without an extreme closeup (and even then, the start of both look a lot alike, only the order in which things change differs). From your micros, the iron levels look fine, though. Milorganite will give you both iron and n...

Re: Ten Things Every Lawn Owner Should Have...

A warehouse full of Milorganite. There you go. :-) Actually: These are for everybody, beginner to expert. 1) A good supply of organic material from whatever source (Milorganite being quite good), or synthetic fertilizer if you prefer 2) A good mower 3) A good trimmer 4) An Ortho sprayer 5) A broadca...

Re: Problems after Elite KBG Renov 2007 - Disease

Not that I can see, no. Doing it once a year is sufficient (actually, not doing it is sufficient). Disturbing the soil surface isn't something I recommend because it brings weed seeds to the surface, which then happily grow. Your worms and micro-arthropods (if you don't have them, after the organics...

Re: Problems after Elite KBG Renov 2007 - Disease

Absolutely--I just got in from dropping 18 pounds per thousand of Milorganite to cover the next two weeks or so on the lawn (and I'm currently drying off; it's hot out there!). Two weeks from now, I use soybean meal at 16 per thousand or so. The gardens get the same treatment. I go at a very high ra...

Re: BEETLES!

You might try a pyrethrin-based insecticide (derived from chrysanthemum flower) instead. It kills them, but it's much safer for animals and humans and you don't need to worry about re-application. The stuff's classed for inside use but works very well outside as well. I use it on my cannas, a favori...

Re: Problems after Elite KBG Renov 2007 - Disease

What's a party without beer? :-) It adds some microbes, plus the material in the beer gives the microbes something to work on. The microbes it adds are no great shakes, and I already have plenty of material, so I don't feel I need to make a special trip for a cheap six-pack. All things considered, y...

Stale's cool. Even just flat is fine, so if you open the beer the night before and let it sit, that will do it. It'll go skunky in the lawn really fast.

Re: Problems after Elite KBG Renov 2007 - Disease

What's core aeration? :-) I've never done it except manually in a few spots. Before going organic, I probably should have but didn't. Now I don't need to. Those several million trillion bacteria and fungi will do a far better job of aeration than the corer can, although you can certainly do it befor...

+1 David. OK. I totally hate to suggest this and expect some fusillade fire from it but...annual ryegrass. It grows fast, will look good to sell the house, and as long as you're out before winter it'll last. Although really, even with the patchiness, I don't think your lawn looks bad at all. This as...

Re: Grass root length/penetration

KBG gets a bad rap in my book. The advertised root depth is 4 inches, but I have a good root mass far deeper than that. When digging in my new Thuja, the mat went down a solid 6"...and that was early in the second year of the lawn. Putting in the new tree a bit later showed roots going down 8", alth...

Re: Soil Test Results

Tilling and mixing in lime could get that pH up faster than not doing so and also easily raise the levels of non-soluble nutrients like phosphorus (which you actually don't need anyway). Andy's notation about your buffer pH is quite correct...you're driving a Hummer with very little gas in the tank....

Re: Stock symbol - COIN

True, sulfur's a critical resource required for amino acid production and root development. Soils that lack it won't grow things very well. For those of us with pH values over 7, we don't worry about adding a few pounds of ferrous sulfate. By the same token, soils with too much sulfur tend to have a...

If you're the only one with a trap within reasonable distances, things can get a little ugly. You get every single beetle within flying distance. My parents were an early adopter on the Bag-A-Bug and had that issue until the idea caught on and the numbers dropped from several bags a day. 'Round thes...

Thanks for the feedback guys. All suggestions will be taken. I'd love to stick with the organic approach especially if it could somehow overcome this problem in the future. What can be done organically in the future? If you were me (lucky you, you just bought my house) and you were planning for thi...

How's the weather been in Kansas this year? If your weather was like the northeast (AKA New Greater Seattle), odd diseases are the norm, not the exception. Three times a week is quite frequent on the water. For now, I'd back off to let the lawn tell you when it needs watering (right now, mine is yel...

Re: New to Lawn Care...

You should be fine. Several hours is more than enough time for the leaf to absorb it, and that's all it requires. It doesn't absorb via the roots and deactivates very quickly in the soil, so any rainfall would have washed it off and stopped the process.

Re: Dilemma - let someone else cut or wait...

The hyphen is unnecessary if the two words are commonly used together, but may be used if confusion could result from leaving it out. In this case, the hyphen is technically unnecessary. Hyphenation rules are murky, though, and that one could be argued either way. Excuse me, I have to go use Q-Tips ...
