Re: Allyn Hayes aka the Lawnnut used to be my idol
I've really enjoyed the Lawn Nut videos -- bumped into them for some tips before finding this site. There's definitely a lot of different advice out there for maintenance practices -- his advice generally seems pretty sound, and he clearly loves maintaining his lawn!

Re: Need help with yellow strips on my lawn!
Thanks for the tips :) I will try that when I apply the winterizer fertilizer this week. Having a 0 degree C night this Friday. Current "consensus" on these forums seems to be to make the final "winterizer" fertilizer application (usually N-only via urea or ammonium sulfate) after top growth stops ...

Re: Planning 2015 Lawn Program
It's good to be thinking about next year well in advance if sourcing needed items is difficult in your area. Your seasonal plan is also going to be potentially different from most (nearly all) readers on here, as your weather is very different than what most of us experience. Gosh, your latitude is ...

Scotts winterguard is 32-0-10. 2/3 of the N is urea, the other 1/3 is mostly fast release as well. The only concern with you northern guys is the high P content. There are a few posts on here recently about P in late fall leading to increase chance in snow mold and other fungus. The lesco is 19-0-7...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Summer 2014
... Your TEC is low. Very low. You have a sandy soil, and sandy soils struggle to hold onto stuff. This is coming from a shortage of all three major cations in the front (Calcium, Magnesium, Potassium (K)), and a lesser deficiency of Calcium and Potassium in the side. The low organic matter is also...

Did nothing on the lawn today, except watch the gale-force winds blow leaves off the trees, out of the woods, across the yard, and every which way. It's kind of nice that the mulched leaves that have settled down in the lawn don't seem to be affected by the wind at all. Looks like I'll have more mul...

Our temps are hovering around freezing with daily highs around 41 F and daily lows of 26.6 F. I did my winterizer on October 19 with Scotts Greenmax. ... but I'm tempted to do one more app. Will there be any benefit or will it be a waste? Sounds like your winterizer of October 19 was about perfectl...

Got out in the yard this morning to mulch up the leaves on the side lawn in advance of the rain's arrival at lunch time. The oak leaves seem to be falling now - there's already a reasonable spread of oak leaves on the back yard that was just blown clear of leaves yesterday morning... Glad to get a b...

Re: Oklahoma Solar Customers May See Charges For Grid Costs
What I don't understand is : if you are generating your own electricity needs, (and not creating demand on the power companies) why would the power companies create a surcharge, if and when you need them. The basic reason is implied by, but buried in, a sentence in the original post: The utility al...

Mowed the front lawn again to mulch up leaves. There weren't as many leaves as at the prior mowing 4 days ago, but wanted the lawn to look nice before the trick-or-treaters started showing up.

Okay, here is a URL list I saved a few months ago. Listed in NO particular order and NOT a complete list. ... Re: Questions about "The Pause"
Was there any sort of climate event that coincided with the grass growth slowing? I've been wondering if there are other "leading indicators" that would be helpful. I haven't seen one yet, but I keep hoping. One that had me curious was whether or not you've turned on the heat in your house yet. We ...

Re: Questions about "The Pause"
First frost is when you get your first frost. That's absolutely true, but using the "actual first frost" as the start of The Pause can cause trouble in anomalous years. I think that's why Andy doesn't recommend using the "actual first frost" as the start of The Pause. If one wants to "play it safe"...
