Re: How much fertilizer should I put down now
Well, whether or not Plan A works depends upon the type of nitrogen fertilizer applied. If the nitrogen is sufficiently slow-release so that the fertilizer applied in April becomes gradually available through April and May, and the September fertilizer becomes gradually available in September and Oc...

Re: How long before removed tree stumps flatten
I concur with Andy's questions -- big variation depending upon what constitutes the mound, and how much of it is wood chips. Ultimately, the wood chips decay away to practically zero volume over time. Posting a picture might help, although it's really hard to see shallow depressions in a still pic. ...

Unlike snowmen, pumpkin men don't melt in warmer temperatures and do just fine when they enter your home. Make sure to lock your doors on Halloween night. https://i.postimg.cc/Bj3Zmpsb/IMG-0058.jpg Really love that one, too! Does liking kitsch art confirm me as a complete non-aficionado? Actually, ...

Grand prize will be awarded to the first that can guess the cause of the below damage to my renovation. This may be the first ever. About 8 in across https://i.postimg.cc/kVgWcY3c/01-CD8-BE9-52-FD-4944-A8-AB-ED83-FB2-B316-D.jpg Hmm. I'm guessing that something may have been sitting there on top of ...

Re: DevilDawg81’s New Lawn - 2020 Version
The other day my wife and I were discussing future plans. I suggested we finish off this “L” shape section to complete the back yard entirely. She immediately chimed in and said “no...it’ll be the front. Everyone sees the front.” So I guess the front it is :) Victory! We all know you really wanted ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation
I don't normally maintain the KBG at such a low height (this year, I maintained the front lawn at 3.25" for the summer, but dropped that to 2.75" at the beginning of September.) However, I have read and heard others report that lateral spread of "baby grass" is encouraged by low mowing for the init...

Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation - Day 45 Photo Update
This has been a crazy-busy week for work for Ken, so we're a couple days late with this week's photos, but that ends up having the pics be on Day 45, which seems like more of a milestone than Day 43 or Day 44, so we'll take it as providential that today is the next weekly installment of photos. We'v...

We're moving toward that time of the year. This isn't an original design, but I made plenty of modifications to it. This is one of the few times I rely heavily on dioxazine purple for anything. https://i.postimg.cc/64nCj0Kv/IMG-0051.jpg Everytime I see this pic, I smile. I'm not an art aficionado, ...

Re: Heritage DF 50 replacement
I haven't used it myself, because I've been able to keep finding sale prices on granular Scotts DiseaseEx, but I've heard of others being satisfied with purchasing and spraying Azoxy 2SC from domyown.com . It's pricey for a small bottle, but ends up being markedly less expensive than Heritage DF 50 ...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Spring 2020
In any case, moving on to the analysis of the actual numbers, it does at least seem that the 6/25/2020 and 10/5/2020 samples were taken from the same lawn. Most items are pretty similar. I speculate that if a soil remediation plan were suggested for each of these lawns, that the recommended course o...

Re: Ken-n-Nancy Soil Test - Spring 2020
I'm a little surprised by the numbers, but probably not as much about the items that changed as why some DIDN'T CHANGE MORE. ... I know you were looking for answers, not more (new!) questions. But this is why we recommend that samples be taken from all over the yard and mixed together when doing so...

Hmm. Not seeing a whole lot of topsoil there. Did they just put your sod directly on top of that "soil" as is?Hammbone81 wrote: ↑October 5th, 2020, 7:21 pmSorry, let's try that again (didn't work with my phone).

Re: Decision to make
Since it is such a small area, I think you're better off tossing the mixed seed down and seeing what comes up in the spring. You can always apply more seed in the spring if not much germinates this year. However, I've sown a northern mix this late at roughly the same latitude and had at least the PR...

Updated soil test results now in!
Today I received the results of the soil test for the sample I collected on 9/24/2020. As mentioned earlier in the thread, I collected this new sample along the road in the front lawn to see if the "autumn" conditions varied in any significant way from the spring sample, particularly in regard to so...

Fast forward to now. I have signed up to have an irrigation system installed! I'm SO excited! I put in a 2nd meter with 1" copper all the way. The system is to be installed next week. This is going to be new uncharted territory for me and I can't wait. Congratulations on the pending irrigation syst...

Ken-n-Nancy inspired me to go mow this afternoon 😀 Honestly after reading their thread I went out this afternoon ... enjoying the nice day and stopping every now and then. Looks great! What was your height of cut? Oops! I had meant to provide some of the "technical details" on the various lawn tasks I did yesterday, but didn't remember to do that... The "first mow" was with a new-to-me Fiskars StaySharp Max manual push reel mower that I purchased on CraigsList explic...

Ken-n-Nancy's 2020 "Driveway Side" Lawn Renovation - 2020-10-01 - Reno Day 36 Photo Update
Today is Day 36 from seed-down and the time for the next weekly installment of photos. We are so thankful that "sprout and pout" is over! The grass grew enough in recent days that we did our first mowing today and also applied additional fertilizer. The renovation has clearly passed the point of loo...

Looks swee-ee-eet! If one has irrigation, a dry spell is the best thing for a renovation -- no washouts to deal with, and watering can be nicely controlled.

Re: Question about when to do KBG plugs....
So for the first time I feel like my KBG might be thick enough to take some plugs from one area... When is the best time to do it? I will be using a pro plugger, how deep should I set it for? Should I fill the holes in from where I get the plugs from with compost or top soil? I actually have plenty...
