Re: 2016: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
^ I feel your pain, Green! The triv/annua battle is going to be a protracted one, but I feel that, with Velocity, we now have an effective alternative to the nuclear option. By the way, I didn't mean to say that I was vigorously raking the dead stuff from the patches, just a light comb-over with a p...

Re: Do I need to use Fungicide?
I am in my first year of only using biological antifungals on my lawn. I've sprayed Serenade at 2oz/gallon every 2 weeks as a preventative, but had to up it to 4oz/gallon for a couple of apps when powdery mildew started to appear. I am also spraying Potassium Phosphite with Potassium Silicate @ 3oz/...

Velocity Recovery
Spot sprayed Velocity at half normal concentration. What a mess it makes of the lawn after a few sprays...but it's supposed to get rid of the Triv. Got just under 2 inches of rain total yesterday. Hey Green, I just wanted to let you know that all should be fine with the areas you sprayed with Veloc...

Thank you jsap819. I guess weed control herbicides is the way to go. I am completely new in weed killing :) . I found this stuff: Preen Lawn Weed Control Plus Crabgrass, it is in granules, easy to spread and seems promising... Or there is better "over the counter" weed killer available? Thank you f...

Re: 2016: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
I did 6 tons of gravel one weekend last year, still have nightmares about it. Sent from my iOS device using the Yard Help App Six TONS of gravel????? I was feeling better, but my legs, arms and back got sore again just from reading that! Also, note to self: issue my highest recommendation and reque...

...which brings me to a question. Based on recommendations made from some around here whose knowledge about turfgrass I respect, I purchased a copy of the very excellent James. B. Beard book, Turfgrass: Science and Culture . After slogging my way through the Growth and Development chapter (I'll be r...

Re: What height are you mowing at?
Since the overseed last fall, I am trying to encourage tillering by mowing shorter than I usually do. 2 3/8" so far this spring (also using PGR), but now will let it go to 3" or so, at least until the seedheads are gone.

Applied 3 oz/k of Potassium Phosphite + Potassium Silicate. Take that, you pythium bastids.

Re: 2016: What did you do to or on your lawn today?
Lowered mower deck to cut at 2 3/8" from 2 3/4", trying to reduce the number of seedheads which are giving my lawn that putrid whitish hue. I'm fairly certain that they are KBG, based upon the seedheads themselves and blade shape--my new PR is visible among the KBG, seedless and pointy-tipped friend...

Boron Results
This is especially for Andy and HLG, who have so kindly provided me with recommendations for improving my soil, but I should share it with everyone. I was wondering why my boron levels didn't move at all from last year to this, even after adding Borax at the recommended rate last year. Well, the rec...

Re: How to Achieve Optimal Soil
Here's one thing that I have started. Hit up your local coffee shops for spent coffee grounds (or is it "grinds" :) ). There is an independent shop that is right on my way home from the gym, so it is no sweat for me to stop by and see if they have any for me. They are very nice about it, and almost ...

Re: North Western IL Pre-emergent application mid May?
I'm not a KBG guy and *certainly* not an expert, but if you seeded on 4/24, I would dare say that it is way to soon to apply a pre-emergent at this time. I overseeded very quickly germinating perennial ryegrass last year, and I just checked my notes. My 4th mowing wasn't until 6 weeks after sowing t...

Re: North Western IL Pre-emergent application mid May?
If your neighborhood is anything like mine, even if you miss the window for crabgrass, it is well worth the time and money to apply a pre-em just to prevent the infestation from the dandelion farms surrounding the yard!

Re: Yellowing grass: Too much water / not enough sun?
Bernstem beat me to it--that NC State site is a goldmine of information. I am not an expert by any means, but my lawn is experiencing pretty much the same symptoms as yours. I have a Nomix lawn, but probably have more than 50% rye in the mix. I have come up with a diagnosis which seems to fit my mix...

Country Way 5 Gallon Rechargeable Sprayer?
Has anyone had any experience with or heard anything about this http://www.ruralking.com/country-way-5-gallon-rechargeable-sprayer-lg-05-ss.html sprayer? My old, broken down shoulder made it a literal pain to use a backpack sprayer, and I ended up giving mine away. I have been using my *old* faithfu...
