Re: Blowouts still going on around here

 Not the kind in your kid's diaper - irrigation systems.... Even though we've had several frosts around here, I've seen several small business - gas stations and restaurants - having their irrigation systems winterized. My irrigation installer wouldn't even set an appointment after 10/28. Hoosi...

Re: KBG Pots-When to Start?

You will have to verify with the pot/plug experts, but I think that you can start them just about anytime. Some do late winter/early spring under lights and then harden them off slowly outside. I start them outside in summer (with lots of attention) so that I have them ready to repair fall mole dam...

KBG Pots-When to Start?

So I just finished reading JGLONGISLAND's excellent article, KBG Sod in Pots http://aroundtheyard.com/home1/articles/162-growing-sod-in-pots.html , and I am going to attempt that next year. I have several patches of tall fescue in my yard that I plan on killing off next August (Hey, only 9 months aw...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

Used the leaf blower on vacuum mode to clear off the deck and the flower beds of leaves. Then I scattered the partially-chopped-up leaves over the lawn, and mowed them in. The neighbor's maple trees are done, but my corkscrew willow and whatever orange tree is in the picture below have a long way to...

Well, now would be a good time to change your moniker to Mr.Green Jeans, or maybe not.

Sorry, oze. I saw your location as Fort Wayne (NE) and didn't notice Indiana :blackeye: Thanks for responding. Your soil thermometer isn't far off. I've seen the one you have but didn't know they were that close , in terms of accuracy. I just may buy one, and crawl around the yard taking my grass' ...

Re: Questions about "The Pause"

Hi, oze. I saw that you mentioned you have a soil thermometer. What kind do you have? I haven't purchased one yet, so if you don't mind, please tell us how your temp readings compare to this site: http://www.greencastonline.com/tools/SoilTempMaps.aspx . What I'm trying to find out is if their tempe...

Re: Questions about "The Pause"

Was there any sort of climate event that coincided with the grass growth slowing? Another thing that I've noticed is that there are other factors than just temperature. A healthier lawn in good soil will keep growing longer than a lawn that is already struggling due to under-fertilization or other ...

Re: Soil Structure Pic

Your soil is very dense and has lots of silt in it, which can make it seem like a clay body. Clay bodies used for e.g. pottery may only contain a small fraction of clay, as well. The clay bodies are simply sifted soils such that you remove much of the sand and other large particles, while geologica...

Re: Soil Structure Pic

And don't these results indicate that we have almost ideal soil, at least in terms of structure? Well, get a soil test from Logan when the ground thaws out this coming spring - that'll tell you. You are a lot further north than me, but what I've found is that newer subdivision - type soils in the I...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

I hand watered my lawn with my backpack sprayer. My wife thinks I'm nuts, my kids thought it was fun, and my neighbors probably think I'm spraying chemicals and letting my kids run around in it LOL just water!! You should have your kids dress up as 3-armed, 4-legged mutants and trick-or-treat at th...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

With colder weather ahead and a thunderstorm rolling in something in the few brain cells left prompted me to run out to the shed, grab the spreader, dump in the 46-0-0 and dash madly across the lawn. Beat the thunder and rain by seconds (literally). IOW, winterizer is done. Nice work--who knew that...

Re: Soil Structure Pic

Thanks, Hoosier. This is yet another indication of just how much I need to learn about soil. As my wife (the gardener) asked when I showed her the tiny percentage of clay in our soil, "Then why can I mold a little clay animal from the soil I dig up 4" down from my garden?" I was feeling the same way...

Re: What did you do to or on your lawn today?

I trampled the couple of feet of turf that borders my driveway as I washed and waxed my car. But I then gently raked it all up to a standing position. My neighbors must really be shaking their heads at me now. Yesterday, I went around raiding neighbors' leaf piles to dump onto my lawn, today I spent...
