Re: December Photo: Losing Color for Winter
I'm not sure whether iron would help this late in the year. The main thing you want to concentrate on at this point is getting the grass to store energy in the roots and you're doing everything right on that note. Everything is relative. Rather than compare your current lawn to your September lawn, ...

Re: Some before/after leaf shots from today...
Looking great! I put almost that many leaves into the lawn 7 weeks in a row . I couldn't believe that I can barely find them now! Andy--Refresh my memory. Are you the one who posted pictures at GW of leaves that piled up to the top of the fence as proof that not everybody could mulch mow all their ...

Re: corn gluten meal questions
10K sq ft is a bit much to try to get by on UCG alone. You'd need about 1200-1600 lbs of UCG per year to get 3-4 lbs of N. That's probably 150-200 of the silver bags. If your Starbucks doesn't give out a lot of grounds, that would be tough to get and if they do, it would be a bunch of work to spread...

Re: corn gluten meal questions
If you only need small quantities, is it safe to assume you have a small lawn? If so, are there any Starbucks on near you (or on the way home from work, shopping, golf, etc)? Starbucks has a corporate policy of giving away their used grounds for free. You don't have to buy anything to get the ground...

You'll probably need their permission to use it if you send a query and parse the results, too. I'd check just to be on the safe side.

Re: Chopped Wood/Plants, etc...
Just make sure that you don't add so much that you bury the grass. As long as the grass is growing through the leaves, chopped stuff etc, you're okay.

My guess is that it will take a little longer to break down than leaves would, but it will be great for the lawn.

Re: Why Do I Bother?
Actually, it sticks out like a beautiful expanse of emerald in the midst of a forest of sore thumbs. :-) There are a few others on the street who look pretty good, though. Those are the ones that feed regularly. A few years ago (before the native grasses started taking over), we were driving down t...

Re: Top Growth Has Stopped
I mowed half my lawn today. I thought I had recovered enough to mow, but it took me 4 hours to do about 2k sq ft and it was snowing by the time I finished, so the back is now covered in a layer of leaves and a layer of snow. It's supposed to warm up during the week, so maybe I'll get another shot at...

Re: Sowing grass seed in Winter: Does it differ from fall seedin
I do a lot of dormant seeding since it's so tough to find a good time for grass seed to germinate here. I'm not sure what you mean by the late fall seeding, but if what you're doing is waiting for the temperatures to drop low enough that the seed won't germinate until spring, we're doing the same th...

Re: New grass and dormancy...
Another thing to consider is that a lack of topgrowth is not the same as dormancy. If it's still green, it's not dormant, even if it's not growing. That's why the late fall high N fertilizer application works as well as it does.

Re: Early Winter? Winterizer Discussion
I haven't put anything down and didn't use any fertilizer at all this year. But I'm trying to favor the low input grasses over the KBG, so don't do what I'm doing (I also only watered 5 times all year and I live in the desert, so the only water we get from June through August, maybe September is fro...

Re: Top Growth Has Stopped
I mowed about a week and a half ago, then most of the leaves fell and it snowed. It warmed up a bit this week, but there's probably still snow in the areas than stay shaded all day. It's supposed to snow again tomorrow, but maybe it will warm up again. And I have to get well enough to mow (I've been...

Re: Another Nor'easter...
Well, I can't compete on the rain, but those winds aren't really all that bad. We regularly (a couple of times a year) get winds strong enough that they close down the interstate and the railroad tracks (or if they don't get them closed in time, there are trains blown off the tracks the next day). S...

Re: Storing leaves
If they stay wet, that will just help them break down. Leaves without additional nitrogen will break down into leaf mold (in BC, I guess they'd break down into mould). That takes forever here because it's so dry, but should happen faster for you (Surrey's in the Vancouver metro area, right?). It wil...

Re: need a link
If you like broader leaves, you could go with K31 tall fescue. I don't like it much, and it's considered an unimproved variety, but a big part of what I don't like is the wider leaves. If you like that look, K31 seed is cheap. You'll need to overseed it every year or two or it will get clumpy, but t...
