Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

From Barley's earlier post, it sounds like 1 tablespoon per 1k square feet of 20 Mules to deal with the boron and zinc deficiencies. Where did you get those numbers? Certainly not from me. [ Post made via Android ] http://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/images/mobile/Android.png From my poor and hurried ...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Just following up on this, to deal with the boron, zinc and sulfur issue. I have miloganite and 20 Mules, but need the zinc sulfate. From Barley's earlier post, it sounds like 1 tablespoon per 1k square feet of 20 Mules to deal with the boron and zinc deficiencies. Where would I get that and in what...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Andy will tell you how much zinc sulfate to buy. Did you get your box of twenty mules? Once you have them in hand, andy will tell you how much to apply. You can apply at any time, but make sure you water it in. both will be applied mixed with milorganite. Sulfur works best in the heat, so now is a ...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Thanks, Barley. Total square footage of grass (for now and likely another season) is just under 7000. Would I add the appropriate quantities of 20 Mule and Zinc sulfate in the same application of Milorganite? Is there a good time of year? And it sounds like elemental sulfur is a stand-alone applicat...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Now we're talkin' Ron! I can tell you "welcome to upper mid-west soils," where the Magnesium will kill your pH. I have the same issue here in WI. It's not terrible, and certainly not a barrier to the lawn you've always dreamed of :). In my opinion, your two biggest charges are to increase your orga...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

So, I did sent a sample to Logan Labs. My sample was at 4-5" from 12 spots throughout the lawn. Here is what they sent to me: Total Exchange Capacity (M.E.): 8.90 pH of Soil Sample: 7.60 Organic Matter, percent: 2.71 Anions: Sulfur: 8 ppm Mehlich III Phospherous: 76 lbs/acre Exchangable Cations: Cal...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Thanks, Gary. Sounds like Logan Labs is a better route for me. I took a look at their site and their "Standard Soil Sample" covers quite a bit of what I need.

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

I can't (and don't) make recommendations based on words like "medium". How many lbs of a nutrient are needed to move "medium" to "high", and what will be the implication of that nutrient on another "medium" nutrient? And whose scale is it a "medium" on? Many labs that provide free or low-cost tests...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

I can't tell you anything about what to do to the soil from those test results. There is no way to know what nutrients go into creating that pH number (no base saturations, no CEC). Check into that "phosphorus ban" - many places allow Phosphorus if you have a current soil test showing a deficiency....

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Thanks. The recommendation by the extension office is for 3 lbs. per year, a 30-x-x fertilizer applied three times. Part of the reason I thought my lawn is hurting in nitrogen is that I have not seen anything with that much nitrogen (the most I can find around here is the 26-0-10, which is why I als...

Re: Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Thank you, Andy. The reason I think it is nitrogen-deficient is because of the recommendation by the extension service to go with a 30-5-10 fertilizer (annual rate per 1,000 sq. ft. of: 3 lbs. of nitrogen, 0.5 lbs. of phosphate and 1.0 lbs of potash). Completely *my* interpretation. I found that the...

Nitrogen-decifient lawn questions

Hello all, I have a fairly new lawn, put in about 18 months ago (mid-October 2010, was told it was Kentucky Bluegrass but does not look like that to me (lots of brown blades in there). I overseeded last spring (I used a pre-emergent which allowed for grass seed germination) and again in late summer....
