I'm curious to see what others recommend, but I enjoyed reading these NJ reports.

Re: Umbo's Late Backyard Reno
I ran into a similar situation last year on Long Island. Our average first frost is October 27. We had a massive oak tree removed right before frost and then the property was graded not once but twice inctroducing minor compaction to 90% of the yard. Based on advice here I went with Hogan’s TTTF + 2...

Re: What are you paying for Urea this year?
I picked up an extra 50lb of urea from Maxwells turf supply last week for $22.50. It was a funny bag that actually has a “vent”. We taped it up so product wouldn’t spill out accidentally. First time maxwells and I have ever seen that on a bag of fert. They also had a generic version of tenacity that...

Re: Yard will be graded near first frost. Seed now or what?
Just wanted to give an update of how things turned out this season. I got a 4oz/acre of Tenacity down in early April and then started spoon feeding urea and bay state. Followed up with 2oz/acre of Tenacity in early May and then .37oz/acre of Dimension 2EW in late May. I kept up as best I could with ...

NJ Overseed agn015
So I finally convinced my mom to let me overseed her back and side yard with the Hogan Blend of TTTF and KY Bluegrass. The backyard was hurting pretty bad from the summer heat and the side yard was just about all weeds. I was originally planning to nuke the side yard and attempt a 1 day reno (seed a...

SLS no longer available from Bramble Berry
I'm getting low on Sodium Lauryl Sulfate powder to make BLSC and when I went to order from Bramble Berry I found out that they are no longer selling it. They've replaced it with Sodium Lauryl Sulfoacetate - SLSA. I understand that while SLSA can be used as a replacement, Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is the...

Re: Benefits of "Proactive" biofungus now
I'll let the more experienced chime in, but I think starting late is better than not at all. I'm only using serenade at the moment but it definitely helped my situation. I seeded with the Hogan TTTF & KBG mix late in October and did a dormant overseed in February so my lawn is behaving like a spring...

Re: agn015 Spring 2018 Soil Test
Thanks Andy, hope you enjoyed your week in Cali. I wasn’t expecting that kind of interpretation. We excavated half of the yard and used that soil to level the other half. Then new top soil was laid on top. I’ll stick with milorganite monthly. Do you have any objections to me continuing to use blsc/k...

Re: Scale for Applications?
I have a very small kitchen scale that’s good for small things up to about 1.5lb. Then for anything heavier, I use a bucket and a luggage scale.

agn015 Spring 2018 Soil Test
Hello ST6, I just got my spring 2018 soil test results back. This is now my third year following the soil remediation plan. I copied the previous years results onto this years test. I also remeasured the lawn at about 12.5k sqft. 2017: https://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=22228&hil...

Re: What’s your average first mow?
We still have a ways to go here on Long Island. We just got a few inches of a wintry mix last night but temps around 50° today made sure it didn’t stick around. This is only my second year keeping notes on the lawn but in 2017 the forsythia bloomed around April 9th and my first mow wasn’t until Apri...

Re: Yard will be graded near first frost. Seed now or what?
Some of the seed has germinated. The areas that were covered in leaves absolutely came in the best. I guess the leaves offered great protection from the cold weather and held plenty of moisture. Looks like I will now be a leaf importer. I already took 3 bags from one neighbor and I can easily fit 10...

Re: Winter Dormant Over Seeding a lawn
Thanks shoepad, the lawn did look great but we just had the property graded so it's now 95% dirt. Bad timing/planning. You can read a bit about it here if you're interested. https://aroundtheyard.com/forums2/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=23444 Caring for a lawn is a marathon, not a sprint. It's actually more ...

And here's what it looked like in fall of 2016 after mulching leaves. While it's not perfect, you should be able to gauge the improvement results. https://s1.postimg.cc/1kd4gnai0b/lawn_16.jpg https://s1.postimg.cc/66yrhcbtyz/lawn_16_a.jpg Last, here's what it looked a few weeks ago. Re: Winter Dormant Over Seeding a lawn
I've had decent luck overseeding in February on Long Island. When I was researching dormant seeding, I found an article saying a February seeding would yield the best results (of winter seeding) the following year. I seeded in February of 2016 and February of 2017. Both times I seeded hours before s...

Re: Yard will be graded near first frost. Seed now or what?
Yeah it sucks that it happened. Live and learn I guess. I owed him some money so it was easy enough to withhold it as a reimbursement Ok I’ll I’ll make sure tenacity goes down early. Should I start with the 4oz/acre rate then follow up with 2oz/acre 4 weeks later? It seems like that is the standard ...

Re: Yard will be graded near first frost. Seed now or what?
They finished the second grading attempt today. I personally checked the entire area with a 4 foot level on a 4x4 and it looks good to me. I know it's too late but I threw down the last of my seed and started 2 small pots inside to gauge germination progress. I don't have much hope and consider this...
