Re: Big Cut in Square Footage
Did you take up the grass first, or just add soil/mulch over top of it? A little of both. I've got 40 more Hosta arriving on Saturday. I can hear the Deer making reservations at night. Would love to see photos, Andy. Not happening any time soon. The Emblem is STILL waking up (I skipped mowing last ...

Big Cut in Square Footage
He won't remember it, but two years ago BPGreen advised me (on another forum) to consider cutting my square footage of grass down from 40,000 to something more manageable, as the twin challenges of a good amount of slope and being surrounded by trees/woods made every weekend a real challenge to do b...

Re: Using sugar to help prevent burn?
Just a reminder that sugar or molasses is not a "when I feel like it" thing. Adding a food source for the microherd that causes large swells in the population, followed by a crash, followed by a swell, followed by a crash is NOT a healthy thing for the soil. Some members of the microherd are valuabl...

Re: Bird Seed in the Lawn?
I'm sure that this will affect very few of you (those living very near large tracts of deep woods), but I recently found out that: (1) bird feeders are a major, major attractant for bears, (2) the bears that are attracted get angry when they cannot easily get the seed out of the bird feeder. Angry b...

Re: Certainty and a Fall Overseeding project
Certainty will kill PR at the higher application rate. I don't know how you feel about dancing on the knife edge, though - there is precious little wiggle room between the PR kill application rate and real harm to the KBG. I did it last year at the higher rate (to get Triv, leftover PR and a little ...

Re: KOG`s Soil Test Results 2010
I'm glad to report that I haven't had that experience. I stick to a Deer Herd, because it is pre-pelletized and easy to spread around the lawn.Have you ever seen a water buffalo poo? It's scary.

Re: KOG`s Soil Test Results 2010
I'm going to be a little stronger than Morph. I see some progress from last year, but there is still work to do... The CEC is fighting us a bit - there's some leaching going on. It's not horrible, but it's enough to keep you honest and make sure that you work all the parts of the growing season, or ...

Re: The Amazing Thing about Yankee Stadium
In the light of a new day, I realize that it was very wrong of me to put "Fenway Park" and "K-31" in the same sentence. It is very insulting.
I apologize to all K-31 growers everywhere.

Re: The Amazing Thing about Yankee Stadium
I have read that a lot of stadiums have no need to use pre and post emergents because the grass is so well protected from the outside world. Au contraire! There was a Phish concert at Fenway Park, and a Yankees fan spilled some of the Yankee Stadium grass seed onto the Fenway Grass. Since a weed is...

How soon can I mow after dropping the mag-i-cal and watering it in? Can I drop/water today and mow tomorrow? or should I just skip a week of mowing, mow next week, but ensure I raise the deck as to not take off more than 1/3 of the grass blades? Apply the Mag-I-Cal, water it in and mow tomorrow. Do...

Do you mean something like this? Certainty Control of Quackgrass For finding that, you have to listen to my newest rant - the "I Want Instant Results" syndrome. It's worse on other forums, but it is present here too. Please note that this control WILL NOT happen in 3 days. The attached article shows...

She did. I told her a ton of stuff. She really liked the Milorganite concepts, until I explained to her that No, you can't put down one $12 bag and be done for the season. Still falls for the ideas that someone has a miracle formula that she hasn't found yet. The ideas that pretty bags of seed are s...

How much did they charge? No idea, but it was too much: Forsythia finished a while ago - wasted Pre-M $$$ Lime reduces fertilizer effectiveness - wasted fert $$$ No soil test - potential wasted or even detrimental lime $$$ Seed hurt by weed control and Pre-M - useless, total $$$ waste Weed control ...

Andy, can you reference what you were reading? Damn!! This is getting to be a tough crowd. Used to be you could dump a half-baked idea and run away. No more. Now they demand your research.... Here are a couple of my references: Nufarm claiming 30-45 day Q residual Rutgers PDF about 20-30 day residu...
