Re: Upping my OM: cornmeal and peat moss

Thanks a bunch, Andy. I'll shoot for a 1/4 inch. That hydrophobic matting effect is certainly a concern. I've never actually top dressed a 1/2", just to be clear, unless you count a covering for a reseeding that didn't go so well...big surprise. Salvaged some of it with a gentle hand, but the whole ...

Upping my OM: cornmeal and peat moss

Hey, all. Last fall I managed to mulch a lot more leaves then in previous years; super happy about that. Now I'm trying to better define my OM plan for the year, based on my resources. KH. Already started. I have 100lbs of cornmeal. My initial thought is to do about 5 apps at 10lbs/k. 3 apps in spri...

Re: 2020: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Applying SoP and KH to a couple lawns.
Home lawn looks ready so I'm giving it the 1st nitrogen with epsom. Didn't get much N from summer on, and no winterization; feels/looks like a good time.

Re: I need some help with this weed and a plan to attack in TTTF reno

I'd wait it out and hit it with triclopyr. May look funky for now, and worsen some, but after the triclopyr app(s) you won't be able to tell the chickweed was ever there. Not mowing for a couple days before or after the herbicide app, along with a little extra irrigation, can help the good turf ride...

Re: Automatic Delivery of Organic Matter

I've still got a decent amount of last fall's leaf mulch that hasn't been gobbled up yet. Hoping to see it disappear soon. Looking forward to doing some more cornmeal apps this year, and chucking some more peat this spring.

Re: 2020: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Applied humus and lobster compost to the garden. Gave it some kelp and humic acid afterward.

Applied some ferrous sulfate to take out a little moss.

Re: Crabgrass cleanup before seeding

Man, it was ugly. I'm also curious how things will turn out this year, with less apprehension now that I know there's ample time to knockout any young CG that slips through, as long as I'm there to see it. ;) Hope things work out for your sis, man. I really underestimated the seed bank on this (my u...

Re: Crabgrass cleanup before seeding

I ended up making a bunch of judgement calls. Never really dealt with such a nasty explosion of crabgrass. Post quinclorac, some CG seemed thin enough to let die out naturally. Some of the beefier CG patches looked like they could potentially cause bare spots come spring; Wasnt 100% on whether they ...

Re: 2020: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Lawn steadily creeping back to green; think just a touch more sun will flip the switch. Put down SoP a couple days ago before a good rain. Waffled on applying prodiamine; average soil temps still hovering sub 50, but hitting short lived spikes of ~60 in full sun. With a string of partially clear 60 ...

Re: So when do we drop the PreM?

Haven't seen any forsyntia bloom in my area, but today I got some soil readings of mid to high 50's at a half inch. Think I'm pulling the trigger Saturday night before the rain.

Re: How Is Everyone Doing? (Coronavirus)

Hanging in alright here. Taxed, but functional... Still need to hit the market more often than I'd like; wish I was good for a few months, but no way around it. I go masked (surgical) and gloved up. Disinfecting everything on porch before it comes in. Concerned for my mother, 64, who still has to co...

Re: Struggling to control fungus

Ah, sorry about that. Figured if it was on my mind it must be 101. Making sense as always, Andy. I've been guessing all along, kinda hoping those two fungicides would cover all the bases, but I'll never be sure like that. I was leaning toward getting samples to umass coop a couple years ago, but the...

Struggling to control fungus

Hey guys. Hope all is well. Well...had a rough run last year. From last spring on I've been dealing with what I believe to be some type of leaf spot disease(s). I first treated it with granular azoxy and propiconazole. It took about 50 days to get things looking healthy. Not being 100% sure of the f...

Re: 2020: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

Cleaned up some straggling leaves. Bone dry so I could crumble them by hand along the way. Feels good. Still a fair bit of leaf clippings in the mix, ready to be gobbled up when the party starts. Lawn looks like winter punched it in the face. Came out of last winter looking much healthier. Maybe the...

Re: Growth Stoppage

I've gotten growth over the past few days. Plan to give it a trim tomorrow afternoon and see where it's at Tuesday before the possible rain/snow rolls in. I remember last year some snow came and went before I put down the urea. Don't recall if the temps had dipped as low as they're about to though. ...

Re: 2019: What Did You Do On Your Lawn Today?

About to mulch the last of the leaves; not much. The recent rain/wind stripped most of the trees in the neighborhood. I got about 90% of the leaves from a 50 foot maple mulched into the front 1.5k. Better than last year. On standby with the urea. Temps really gonna drop next week.

Crabgrass cleanup before seeding

I have a little bit of spot seeding to do on a neighbor's lawn tomorrow (we're late). There's still a bit of crabgrass hanging around after doing a couple quinclorac apps. It's not much but it's mostly in the area to be seeded. I've pulled some, but it doesn't always come up easily/neatly. Rather th...

Re: Seeding after WBG with crabgrass control.

I dont want to feel like I'm spamming the forum so hopefully it's ok tagging this question here? We're planning to seed around August 22nd. Right now the only weed prevention in place is whatever residual effects may come from the quinclorac. I'm going to be using Scott's mesotrione starter at seedi...

Re: Seeding after WBG with crabgrass control.

Interesting. I hadn't thought of that. The lawn in question got by mostly with rain throughout spring. We didnt even begin to address irrigation issues until summer, when it became very clear that we had to. I think we had above average rainfall in April and May, though. I wonder if their accidental...
