Re: Question: Grass-in-a-cup for patching

I suspect that if you google for growing grass in flourescent light, you'll get a lot of results, but the grass is probably a different variety than what you're growing.

I first searched google for surrey, BC, then clicked on maps and searched for Corn Gluten Meal feed.

Re: color fading

I think it's fairly normal. If you've got elite KBG cultivars, it's probably still darker than your neighbors' lawns. If I were you, I'd do the usual, wait for the top growth to stop and add the N to keep it green all winter.

Re: Fine fescue follies

"Should I dormant seed or plan on dropping more seed in the spring or will this somehow thicken up." How much of the mix is creeping red fescue? Most fine fescues will tiller, but the only one that spreads via rhizomes is CRF. If you've got enough CRF, it will spread, but if you don't, it will fill ...

Re: CGM questions

"Does this mean that I won't find true CGM at a feed store, and that my only options are the marketed products of the licensees? (e.g. Scott's Turf Builder with CGM is one option here)." No. What it means is that if you buy CGM to use as a pre-m, you're supposed to pay more for it because of the lic...

Re: Topdressing Tips and Techniques?

There is no great way. Just use a shovel and fling it around. D'oh! Thanks. I thought there was some kind of special spreader or something. There are special spreaders, but they tend to be pretty expensive. Somebody at GW (I think it may be pt03, aka Lloyd) made some from scratch that looked pretty...

Re: soil test are BACK

The advantage to greensand is that it seems to make the iron available even in high pH soils. The disadvantage is that it's only available in certain areas and shipping is very costly.

Re: Anyone using Open Office?

I used OO exclusively for a couple of years. It was good and about 90-95% compatible with MS Office. The problem was in that last 5-10%. It would sometimes get frustrating when a document would paginate differently and we'd be discussing it on a conference call. Several years ago, OO writer had a pr...

Re: Newbie w Soil Test: Please Help with Fall/Winter plan

Thatch is a layer of dead grass and roots above the surface of the soil. Unless you've been watering and/or fertilizing incorrectly, it's rarely a problem. If you have been watering and/or fertilizing incorrectly, it's easily fixable. Don't overwater and don't overfertilize. That's a start. If you h...

Re: Just bought house - need help with plan

One thing to keep in mind is that your brother will be taking possession at the end of October. That limits his options in a lot of ways. He definitely can't do a renovation. he can follow the advice in the article Mallory (aka bestlawn) linked). He can also decide whether he wants to try to dormant...

Re: What are "Effective Microbes"?

'I'm hearing more about Effective Microbes (usually with the TM after the name) and am wondering what they are and how they might differ from compost bacteria that we can grow in our own compost tea. "

I haven't heard of them, but my guess is the main difference is that they cost more.

Re: Soil Test Results - Help!

"It appears that the grass darkens up a little immediately after the Ironite applications, but it is very short lived." That's right. I heard this explained recently on a gardening show podcast where they were discussing iron chlorosis. I'll try to summarize the explanation they gave. Due to the hig...

Re: Where does the Nitrogen go?

Green leaves would have nitrogen in them, but I don't know about the yellow leaves. However, the number of leaves that are still green when they fall is pretty small in comparison with the number that are brown. Also, when people talk of things as being a carbon source or a nitrogen source, they don...

Re: ping: Morpheus

That was I. I had been an uncompromising fan of UCG until I realized how small my lawn is compared to a lot of other lawns. I've got about 4k sq ft, but really only use the grounds in the front and side yards (I let the dog add nitrogen to the back yard). In my case, I just stop by a Starbucks when ...

Re: Soil Test Results - Help!

I find it at a local nursery. It's expensive, so I use it only on individual plants (like the tree and a couple of roses) that show signs of iron chlorosis (green veins and yellow leaves). One thing about it is that once the leaves are yellow, it may be too late for the chelated iron to do it's stuf...

Re: ping: Morpheus

The reason you think of acidity when you think of coffee grounds is that coffee is acidic. But the acidic stuff is pretty much all water soluble, so the grounds are very close to neutral pH.

Dang. I posted a reply, but it got lost somehow. I think I remember reading a post or two from you on using vinegar. I definitely remember reading the one where you said to use it in the soil structure test because I hadn't read that one before. I've read the bit about using it to test for calcium o...

Re: Question: Grass-in-a-cup for patching

C&C--I think your question is different enough from Andy's that it should be a separate thread so the answers here don't get hard to follow with multiple discussions going on (which tends to happen anyway). Andy--I think that's a good question. In fact, I've sometimes wondered about this in a more g...

Re: Soil Test Results - Help!

Just one note on Andy's shopping list there. Make sure you're careful on the first one. It's easy to misread as magnesium sulfate. Magnesium sulfate is the chemical name for epsom salt and is readily available in some garden centers and in drug stores (more expensive and higher grade than the stuff ...
