I have a Honda HRX and a Craftsman tractor (with mulching kit). The tractor does a so-so job, and I use it in leaf season for first passes in the flatter areas of the back yard. Everything gets the final pass with the Honda though - it's worth the extra effort. It does it well enough that the pieces are between fingernail size and coffee-ground size.

Seems like when it wears out, I should think about replacing my basic mower with something better.

My problem is that I really want a basic push mower without any extra systems that may break -- I'd rather not have the extra complexity, weight, and breakability of a self-propelled mower but haven't seen a durable, quality mower that was just a simple push-it-yourself mower.

The weight shouldn't be much of an issue if you aren't pushing it. The drivewheel system appears quite simple when i have looked at the drawings/parts explode. Probably one of the simplest part of a mower from what I can tell.

.....I have seen and had issues with non-power windows in cars...

I can attest to the simplicity of the front wheel drive transmission, at least the one in my Toro Recycler. I have had to replace the cable twice. :(
