ATYU - Soil Test - Summer '17

Post by ATYU » July 20th, 2017, 2:11 pm

Hi y'all!

Image

My concern:
What do I need to add and where do I get it from?

My Goal for Fall '17:
Apply Glyphosate (RoundUp) to kill the current grass/weed.
Dethatch & Aerate Soil
Plant new seeds

Thank you

Hi!

it's an established lawn (Tall Fescue I believe).

Hi, just wondering if anyone can give some feedback (yes, I understand it's volunteer work..it's just that it's that time when I really need to start prepping for the fall complete reno/redo. :) ) Thank you

You're still a few entries down in the queue for a full write-up, but I've done the preliminary work and there is nothing that is major work in that test. There is absolutely nothing that is going to interfere with a renovation.

PS: please follow the guidelines for test depth on future tests - the 5" depth requires additional work to standardize the results.

Thanks for your quick feedback. I am planning on adding a 1/4-1/2 in of top soil so will lay down some lime and all too if I go with that option. Will wait for your complete analysis on this soil test. thanks again.

I like this soil. Only a couple tweaks, really.

The OM level is almost to the great range. This is probably the most work, but the level you have isn't bad at all. Keep mulch mowing when you don't have fungus, adding free sources, mulch those leaves - get some apps down.

The TEC shows a nice loam soil. Not heavy. Not sandy.

The major cations are in good alignment. The Ca shows ever-so-shy, but really it's in a good spot. The pH is in a good spot for your turf species too @ 6.4. K and Mg spot on.

Phosphorus is great. Iron great too, and quite usable. Sulfur, check.

Really not much to do here.

I think we can tweak the Ca level a smidge. Apply 2 lbs / K of a good calcitic lime (mag-i-cal or encap) now, a week from other fertilizer.

You'll need a good Nitrogen program. Fescue doesn't need as much N as KBG, keep that in mind when you're reading the fall aggressive nitrogen program threads. I'd drop 1 lb / K urea (46-0-0) once a week for the next 3-4 weeks in your area and water it in. Apply 2 lbs / K when top growth stops but the roots are still growing to winterize. Water them in afterwards or apply before natural rainfall.

Other than that, work on the OM level and get it over 5%.

Thank you HoosierlawnGnome!!!!

I'm completely removing old grass and planting new seeds.

Here's my progress on 5K yard.
Today, I'm dethatching the lawn currently (LOTTTT of work) to remove old (dead) grass.
Tomorrow, I'm laying down some black soil (they said it's the best quality they have). 10 cu yd for 5k yard is good?
Tomorrow, after putting down the soil, I plan on running aerator.
Tomorrow, finally, water the soil with baby shampoo.

Monday, I'll put down encap http://www.acehardware.com/product/inde ... Id=2783785 ??

Tuesday, put down new seeds, scott's starter fert with weed control, milo. Should I put down peat moss on top?

Wednesday, spray tenacity throughout the yard.

Friday/weekend, put down Headway G fungicide.

Am I on the right path?
I'm not sure if I'll get urea on time, so not sure about that.

Thank you
