tman 2017 soil test

Post by tman7078 » August 13th, 2017, 5:54 pm

I did a full renovation last fall of my back yard. It was a moderate success with the thin areas finally filling in. I plan on doing a fall overseeding in next couple weeks to fill in the thinner areas. My desire is for a thick green yard that may require a lot of owner maintenance. It is 70 x 40 with KBG on the Nebraska /South dakota border. I have only putting N down every 4 weeks at bag rate and spot spraying with 2-4-D. I have underground irrigation.

Looking forward to any input on my soil report.

This my Logan soil test

Nope, you just caught me at a time when my eldest son (SLYDER27 here) is getting married on Friday, I'm traveling to Buffalo every week for work, and I'm very involved with replacing all the WiFi at a 5-building, 240-unit condo community in Key Largo -- on top of my activity here. Sorry, I'm doing all I can and things should improve after this weekend.

I started my first Fall nitrogen regime which will be the aggressive plan unless it is suggested not to do it after my soil management plan is done. I applied milorganite at bag rate on 8-26 and picked up 50# bag of urea for $12 and will be putting down 6 weekly applications of N at .5#/K starting 9/9/17. I decided not to do any fall over seeding and see how well the fall N regime helps fill in my lawn next year.

I applied my first application of urea last night at 1#/1000. It was three days late. :(

I'd stick with the Fall Nitrogen Regimen and apply what I'm writing below this in the Spring...

That's an interesting soil. It is a little too dominated by Magnesium, but we can work with that over time. The end result of the cations is that the Calcium is a little short, the Magnesium too high and the Potassium quite short -- but the pH is 6.6 and in the sweet spot for the wrong reasons. But we don't want to mess with anything strong or sudden, as we'll lose the sweet spot.

Apply Gypsum at 30 lbs/K in May and September next year. Also get and apply a balanced fertilizer like 10-10-10 or 19-19-19 monthly - locate one and post the NPK for application numbers that will be monthly. The balanced stuff will address Phosphorus and Potassium shortages as well as making the Nitrogen app.

The Iron numbers are too low. Either apply Milorganite off-cycle from the balanced fertilizer, or make Ferrous Sulfate apps or FAS foliar apps.

Are you interested in addressing the Boron and Zinc micronutrient shortages?

PS: you could open a Manganese (not Magnesium) mine with your soil...

Andy,

Thanks for the plan. I will continue the fall nitrogen plan and follow you advice next spring. When I buy the balanced fertilizer next spring, I will check with you on the rate. I will also do the Miloganite off-cycle, what is off-cycle exactly?

I will also like fix the boron/zinc shortages if you tnink I need to.

Andy10917,

I found 10-10-10 fertilizer, what rate should I put it down?
What do you mean by apply milorganite off cycle?

10 lbs/K, monthly

Off-cycle means that you apply the Milorganite exactly halfway between the 10-10-10 applications. If you are always applying 10-10-10 on the first of the month, then off-cycle is to always apply Milorganite on the 15th of the month.

Andy,

Thanks for the quick reply.

Do you recommend bag rate for the milorganite?
