Soil Conditioner and Kelp Help

Post by Tfree20 » June 11th, 2019, 8:36 am

I'm hoping someone here can give me a little direction on the BLCS and BLKH.

- I have all liquid ingredients. Will my measurements be any different than what's instructed?
- Also, for sodium laureth sulfate, is 80oz a typo, should it be 8oz? That seems like a lot of SLES to be mixed in just 40oz of water.

I want to make sure I'm measuring these correctly so I'm efficient with my use, and because if 80oz is correct, then I need to order about 3x what I did of the SLES.

I apologize if this has been addressed in another thread. I searched and found a lot of good info but couldn't find anything specific to these questions. TIA!

Yes, the original BLSC recipe called for 80 oz of liquid SLES per gallon of mix, the rest being water and yucca, if including. There's a reason that most of us switched to using powdered SLS. The idea is prepare a high concentration mixture, but not so concentrated that it precipitates out (as can happen with the powdered SLS above 6 oz) or is too gloopy for the hose-end sprayer. With the liquid SLES, diluting a bit with water helps with the latter.

Thanks for the feedback! I was going to use a pump sprayer but it sounds like it would be best to use a hose-end sprayer.

Definitely. You want to put it down with a lot of water.

That's good to know. Can you point me in the direction of the best deal on powder SLES or something similar that will work that you recommend?

So I just mixed the soil conditioner using liquid SLES and it turned into a gelatin like mixture in my container. I don't think I can even use it , can I? I don't see how it would work in a hose end sprayer.

Anyone else have this happen? I'm already planning on buying powder SLES next time.

No. I used liquid SLES the first time before switching to powder SLS (not SLES) solely due to cost. As you'd expect, adding water to liquid SLES just thins it. I have no idea why you experienced what you did.

Well after letting it sit for 24 hours, about half of the "gelatin" is gone. I'm hoping the rest will begin to dissolve, but may add some extra water to see if that helps.
