tph018's Soil Test: April 2020

Post by tph018 » April 20th, 2020, 2:42 pm

Thanks in advance for reviewing my test results and your suggestions, including the addressing of micro's. The attachment also shows the soil test results from the previous five years so you can see the emerging trends.

Background: I live in southwest Connecticut in Fairfield county on a 2 acre lot of land, of which 1.2 acres represents lawn. I'm on well water and do not irrigate. For nitrogen, I typically apply soybean meal throughout the feeding season except for the winterizer application in which I apply urea. This year, I plan to apply mostly urea and the remaining soybean meal that I have from last year. I have been applying micro's time and resources permitting for the past three seasons, in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

Here is a link to last year's results and discussion.

Tph018, where are you at? I’m in Weston, trying to learn this lawn care business, and always looking to meet new people in the area with similar interests.

Hi @bryankloos!

We should definitely meet up...

I live in neighboring Wilton! I have been at this lawn care stuff for the past 5-6 years, time permitting of course, but it is enjoyable to see results at the end of the day when the work is put in.

If you are ever on the look out for lawn amendment supplies (for example, urea, calcitic lime, grass seed) in the local area, I am happy to offer help with places to gather these items.

I'm at a loss about where the things that you are applying are going. Do you have a list of what was actually applied last year, and in what amounts?

Hi Andy,

The 2019 season was a bit of an aberration for me as I was not able to stick with my soil amendment schedule as hoped.

As a result, in terms of soil amendments, I only was able to apply:
1. A heavy rate of calcitic lime only once in May 2019. 450 pounds worth over a 1 - 1.2 acre area.
2. 3 tablespoons/K each of Twenty Mule Team Laundry Soap (grocery) only once as well.
3. No Sulfate of Potash apps nor Ferrous Sulfate apps.

I hope that helps explain the soil test results...

Your tests over the years show that you're sampling almost certainly is hitting a soil horizon. The only things that changed appear to be aberrations from the sampling change, and they're not confirming each other well.

Sorry to say, but I think that you'd be best off continuing (and finishing) the 2019 plan - it lines up best with the long-term trends.

Try Treeland in Bridgeport (on the Trumbull line, right off Rt8). They usually have just about everything.

edit: should have mentioned, hello from Shelton! :)
