Escondido Gardener Year 3 Soil Test Results

Post by escondidogardener2 » June 22nd, 2021, 1:42 pm

I have been following the plan laid out by Andy for the last year:

Deep (1 inch) and infrequent irrigation, I did not overseed my Bermuda with Rye this year and it greened up 2 months early.

Monthly
2lbs per 1k of SOP
2lbs per 1k of Urea (May - Dec)

Every 6 weeks
Ferrous Sulfate 2lbs per 1k

Every 60 days
Boron 3 tablespoons per 1k
High bag rate pelletized fast acting Gypsum

Here are the results which I had split for the first time (Front Lawn & Back Lawn) - Also, for the first time I used a soil sample tool and took 10-12 samples in each location. Please ignore the 6 inch sample as it is incorrect, both lawns were sampled at 4 inches.

Three points:

(1) You can't "ignore" the 6" test depth - all you can do is perform a calculation for anything expressed in lbs/acre to the standard 4" test. It's always good, however, to admit to your error so we know that the recalculated numbers are real.

(2) Post a Link to this thread in the Soil Test Interpretation Queue, please.

(3) Blah, blah, blah. Lots of numbers but no "how the hell does it look now" data (the Eyeball Test). Without the optical receptors, I have no idea if things are working or if I should try a different approach.

Hi Andy -

I have posted to the queue.

Overall both lawns have shown growth but it's quite slow. Not overseeding with winter rye has had a huge effect on the green up. I am happy so far and hope that as things heat up the Bermuda will fill in (quite a few places have clover and some other broadleaf weeds). I notice that the ground is quite hard just a few days after a deep watering.

Ugh!! One the tests is at 6", and the other at 4" - this makes it tough to come up with a single plan...

Front Yard
Use a Starter Fertilizer (due to low Phosphorus) monthly at bag rate
Do the Iron treatments as you did last year
Do the Gypsum treatment as you did last year (for Sodium)

Back Yard
Use Urea as you did previously

Micro's are OK...
