I have an old Scotts handheld fertilizer spreader and my latest bag of Espoma dried chicken manure granules are chunkier than usual.
On my Scotts' widest "5" setting, they don't go through and are too thick for the opening and get jammed up.
I have a small yard under 4k sq ft, and don't really want to buy a push rotary or drop spreader.
Can anyone recommend a solution? Cutting open a larger opening in the scotts spreader, a hand held of another brand with a larger opening, or an amendment to add to the granules like corn meal to help them make them pass through?
It seems like there is enough manure dust in there already, spreading a cloud when it does pass through, but maybe it's too fine to stop it when it clogs.

Re: Scotts hand held fertilizer spreader - too small opening
Oh geez, this is a tough one. Short of chopping the prills somehow (machete?), are you sure the opening is actually reaching the max? I've had two different hand held scotts spreaders, and sometimes the mechanism can get hung up and no open properly. I usually have to jiggle the trigger and manually clear any obstructions.
