71GTO 2024 soil test

Post by 71GTO » March 12th, 2024, 9:40 pm

I'm starting up year eight, I have about 13k of Nomix lawn. This year I did one test on the front back and the dead zone corner that I have referenced and tested separately in past years. As my regular fertilizer regiment I use Ocean gro. I just can't beat the price when I buy it on sale in April, but I wanted to ask if there is maybe a better fertilizer that won't break the bank and is readily available.

I have fifteen minutes until my next meeting and I'm burned out. Congratulations, that means you win. :-)

I don't have any major issues with this soil. Phosphorus, calcium, and magnesium are good. Sulfur's fine. I'd be OK with any organic feeding you wanted as Ocean Gro is kind of high in phosphorus, which you don't need, but price will depend on what you can source.

Potassium is a little low, and OG is extremely short on that (most organics are, actually), so we'd have to add it synthetically. I'd suggest potassium sulfate as per the below.

Most minor elements look fine, except boron. We can use the Micronutrient Application Guide, and mix 5 tbsp per thousand square feet of 20 Mule Team Borax in with Ocean Gro instead of Milo (it's close enough).

As per The Dead Zone, if it's just thin, try raking 1/3" of compost over the top of it in April, then every four to six weeks as the compost decays in to increase the organic matter percentage and water retention. If it's really really truly dead, you can add an inch or more at a time and then reseed it in fall, with a thin scatter of compost atop the seed. Don't dig compost in, it doesn't work well.

Suggested Applications:

April or May: Potassium sulfate at 3 pounds per thousand square feet. Apply 5 tbsp per Thousand Square Foot of 20 Mule Team Borax in Ocean Gro carrier as per the Micronutrient Application Guide.

September: Potassium sulfate at 2 pounds per thousand square feet. Apply 5 tbsp per Thousand Square Foot of 20 Mule Team Borax in Ocean Gro carrier as per the Micronutrient Application Guide.

November: Potassium sulfate at 2 pounds per thousand square feet.

Thank you so much! I did some searching an found this is available locally. Will this fit my application better? I can still use can bro for the boron applications.

If that were literally the last "organic" on the planet, I might be fine with it. It isn't, so I'm not. Those are slow release synthetics with some organics added. I'm not going to say "avoid, avoid, avoid" because they have their place, it's just not as an organic.

Thank you, back to the ocean gro plan... I'll keep looking. Should I try to stick with organic fertilizers?

OM of 6% is in the Excellent range. I'd try to keep it there, but that doesn't mean synthetics are off the table. I'd strongly suggest organics, but that doesn't mean you have to do that.
