Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Step 1 completed - cultivar selected
Dennis at Williams scared the hell out of me. I called and the conversation went like this:
Andy: Hey, Dennis!! Whatcha want for 50 lbs "Blueberry, Sod Quality"?
Dennis: Five.
Andy: (spits out lunch) Five??!?! Are you crazy?
Dennis: Not that I'm aware of. I thought that was a good price for 50 lbs. Shipping included.
Andy: (gets off floor) Five ?? What are you selling 5 lbs quantities for?
Dennis: $6.25 a lb.
Andy: Oh damn!! $5.00 -- I thought you meant $500 for the bag!!
Dennis: In my dreams.
So, it's gonna be a Blueberry monostand.
This is actually not Step 1 -- but I don't want to think too much about the irrigation installation I need to do on Saturday in 98 degree heat.

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
That might have put a dent in some business. I chose Blueberry as one of my 3 cultivators for front and side yard reno this year. I really liked what I saw in the pot test.
This heat has been ridiculous. I have only been able to work about 1-2 hours a day on the irrigation system because of the heat. Had a dizzy spell over the weekend from heat exhaustion. Luckily they are calling for some rain and temp relief this weekend. Hope it heads east to give you some relief.

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Nice Andy, other than color and growth habit was their any other reason for picking out Blueberry as a monstand for you?
If you recall my post earlier this spring that was my jaw dropping at the cost of bewitched. So far I've got 50lbs sod quality Blueberry, 50lbs sod quality Prosperity, 50lbs sod quality Everglade, 40lbs certified Nuglade (was told over the phone it was certified), and 3lbs of certified Bewitched. I think I went and threw myself overboard with the anchor wrapped around my leg as the ship sank. At least I have local friends willing to get some off me. The only interesting thing is at the time for what sss wanted for a 50lb bag of sod quality bewitched I have bought this much seed. Now what do I do with it all?

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
There are three things that I concentrate upon: dark color, dark color and dark color. In my opinion, Black is a good shade of Green.Nice Andy, other than color and growth habit was their any other reason for picking out Blueberry as a monstand for you?
PS: while buying from Dennis, I offered him "good money" to throw a handful of Poa Triv seed into any buyers' purchases that I specified. He laughed -- I don't know why...

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Emblem is very cool and doing very well (maybe pics this weekend). Can't buy Emblem any more though, so it's Blueberry for the Back Yard. That means I lose a ton of experimental space.

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Hey Andy,
I love my Blueberry/Emblem mix as both cultivars are very dark and that's is what I wanted when I
did my reno. No regrets at all. I only wish they still made Emblem. Now if I ever need to over seed light areas after damage it's all Blueberry for me. I hope they don't discontinue that as I will always use Blueberry as my primary choice cultivar.
I may have a small 20,000 sq ft reno in the works for next season and I am
contemplating a Blueberry / Granite / Zinfandel trimix.
Best wishes and good luck on your Blueberry but I know that you don't need luck!

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Trenching 500 ft worth of trench, putting in five zones of irrigation, refilling the trenches and then RoundUp (generic) soup for the grass in this weekend's heat nearly killed me and my 30 yr old son. 23 hours of work in two days. This is actually not Step 1 -- but I don't want to think too much about the irrigation installation I need to do on Saturday in 98 degree heat.
Next week we take it easy with only 15 yards of topsoil to move around.

No, the front yard has had an irrigation system for several years. The back yard (bigger) had to wait until now.

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
I attempted tp do one myself a few years ago, unfortunately the Tennessee rock was more than I could handle. I rented a trench digger but even it kept getting clogged with rocks. When I laid out the pipe and found I needed another couple of inches I abandoned the project. It turned out ok for me though, I had fescue at the time but now with Zoysia I don't have to water much, I've only watered twice this year and the last time was 3 weeks ago. The summer showers have provided plenty of irrigation for this grass.

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Well, this is new construction, so the top layer is all fill that was brought in....there are plenty of rocks under that though...I wouldn't attempt it without a trencher

Re: Andy's 2013 Back Yard Renovation
Any weather relief in site? After a week or two in the 90s and high humidity we are seeing two days of rain and temps in the high 70s/low 80s over the next several days. I am still trying to finsih my irrigation system. It's about 3/4 done and the rain isn't helping at all. The yard is a combination of dead grass and mud.

Right now the schedule is for August 24th, but so far I'm ahead of schedule. I may be ready to go August 17th - I already have the seed.

Yup!! I got asked if it gets less stressful when you've done a bunch of renovations.
No, it doesn't.
