You just want to have a renovation of some sort for a fourth year in a row!

It's true.

The thought crossed my mind that, IF I could get a good enough grade on it, I might be able to put in some real turf..... but I really would be better off with clover.

Thought you all might want to see some updates.

Closeup of more recently seeded clover about 3 weeks old:

A thicker more mature area dormant seeded from the winter:

This is all going to get graded and redone this fall when they put in the septic. I like the clover a lot really.

Yes I love how it's turning out. The soil is quite rocky and tight though. Stays shady and moist. I need to learn how to encourage the clover to grow better.

So far this is 100% chemical and fertilizer free. As far as I know there has NEVER been anything applied to the soil. Maybe cow manure when there was a cattle farm down the road a ways 100 years ago.

Just saw this while seed shopping at SSS - I don't know a thing about it:

Microclover

Half the size of regular clover

Nice!

I like what I have for now. Dutch white clover.

Today I weed whipped 1000 s.f. of clover and whatever else was growing in there. I knock anything over a foot tall down. Works great.

Preferred seed also sells microclover, but it's god awful expensive.

No. this is a long ways from any invasive species.

Quick update on this. After things really grew in, the clover got pushed out and is overgrown with larger brush type plants. The fescue on the other hand is holding other species at bay well.

I was thinking you could overseed with sweet Allysum, baby blue eyes and white yarrow, maybe some strawberry clover and hard or sheep fescue.
I think the key with this type of area would be constant overseeding with various self seeding annuals until you create some stable but fluctuating ecosystem

Hi,

Whatever happened to this project? I'm in a similar situation (timberland that I want to convert to grass cover but not August National/MLB baseball outfield quality).

I sowed the grass and have only trimmed it a few times. It is about a foot and a half tall normally, chokes out most small trees.

This is what nearly unmanaged tall fescue looks like.

Last year this was cut one time with a weed whip.

It has done a great job of keeping the small trees out.

I need to find something to maintain it more easily, like one of those big push string trimmers. Something like a mini bush hog.

It's a thriving ecosystem.

In an hour while working, i found two adolescent black snakes, a timeber rattlesnake shed, 2 salamanders, and a wood turtle in this small area without even looking for them.
