I have never seen zoysia go crazy. It's a slower grower. But once it fills in... It's awesome.Main_sail22 wrote:I thought after removing some thatch it would go crazy....

SACole, should I be worried about the front yard the way it looks right now? Anything I can do to aid in a speedier recuperation?

I would just make sure you apply enough dihydrogen oxide to keep it happy. Applying alfalfa pellets will kick into high gear (as high gear as zoysia has...), and they are cheap too.

I am unfamiliar with alfalfa pellets...do they release di hydrogen oxide? Any particular brand you recommend?

Re: Zach's FY16 RENO-Rye to Zeon Zoysia
So... I was asking a serious question as I am just getting into the lawn world.... And although I have an irrigation in place, I don't have it connected to a well/ pump yet...that'll be this winter. As for the "hahaha". .....eat a di*£. I got it now, lol. In all seriousness, what does alfalfa do for grass? And as for as the recommendation question, I was referring to alfalfa pellets... Not the water smart a$$

Alfalfa pellets are just an organic source of food made from alfalfa plants which is used to feed rabbits, horses, etc however it can be used as an organic fertiliser on your lawn. The brand doesn't matter.

There are numerous threads and posts here describing alfalfa's effect on turf growth and why.
It's all in jest. Relax.Main_sail22 wrote:As for the "hahaha". .....eat a di*£.

Re: Zach's FY16 RENO-Rye to Zeon Zoysia
I'm cool with jokes and jest...that's no problem, but if someone recommends something that they know I'd previously posted, one would assume they should post the thread that containes the message or provide the info first hand....that's all I'm saying. I'm serious about my lawn and to sink 8k in a lawn to get some guys laughing about advice is not ok.... Time and place for everything LR. Again I'm ok with the joke about H2O... Just wanting to learn more about the Alfalfa...

Re: Zach's FY16 RENO-Rye to Zeon Zoysia
Sorry for derailing your thread. I wasn't trying to create any animosity here, just having fun with chemistry.
Alfalfa contains a plant growth hormone. As stated, there are some threads here and elsewhere where this is discussed. You can get it at Tractor Supply or most feed stores. Apply it at 15-20 lbs/K. It will expand when it gets wet and look like green turds. Wait until it dries and go over it with a mulching mower or find another way to break them apart (broom, foot, etc). After a week or so you should start seeing enhanced growth.

Re: Zach's FY16 RENO-Rye to Zeon Zoysia
I dropped bag rate Milo and 10#/K rabbit food on my lawn two weeks ago. Cutting every four days I am taking an inch off the Meyer Zoysia sections. I'm hoping it spreads to fill in some bare spots.

Re: Zach's FY16 RENO-Rye to Zeon Zoysia
I mowed at a HOC of 1.14", applied Alfalfa pellets at a rate of 10lbs/1K, along with an app of milo @ half of the suggested bag rate, and watered. I have about another month before I throw down another balanced fertilizer (from what I have read, 14-14-14 is a slow release good for 3 months.)

14-14-14 tells you nothing about whether a fertilizer is slow-release or not, and very few garden fertilizers are slow-release. Did the bag indicate it was slow-release?14-14-14 is a slow release good for 3 months

Andy, yes the bag stated it as a slow release fert. That's why I added that bit of info in case anyone asked why I was waiting so long to put down another app.
