Re: Nick's rookie Reno 2nd glyphosate app down
I didn't see an answer to this, and I have the exact same question. I see that you decided to go ahead and use Milo at seed down. I picked up six bags of Milo just because Walmart had it on sale for $5/bag. Should I apply at seed down along with the starter fertilizer, or wait till later?edenl01 wrote:Quick question here, what is the logic behind dropping milo and starter at seed down. I've read it done several times I was just curious why. My guess is that it will provide some slower release feeding for 2-4 weeks?

I think you'll be ok with both, a lot if successful renovations have dropped both at seed down. For the milo I buy into the slow release part for around the 14-30 day range to get ya through sprout and pout. I used starter mostly for the P and K not so much the nitrogen. Good bargains man!

Re: Nick's rookie Reno Day 10 pics
Rain, rain go away. Seems to be a common problem this renovation season, or maybe it is every year I don't know. I was pretty pumped with how its going for 13 days in. Most of the yard is turning green. Last night we got a punishing rain. Amounted to about a half inch. It wasn't a nice easy soaker its was mean and loud. I found the sprouts all smashed down to the ground this morning. About 4 hours after that we got another punch in the stomach.
Its raining now and forecast another inch tonight through Saturday. I have standing water in some spots. The profile of the deck is now bare from the water dripping down. I don't have near the situation as some of the others this season though.
Its a bummer for sure but I've read renos were people were completely under water and they ended up just fine in the end. If any of the seed was having trouble germinating it shouldn't over the next few days. I will have spots to fix up and I only have a half a pound left. If I need to I can order the seed for next fall already. I can't sit on that decision too long because October will be here before you know it.

Re: Nick's rookie Reno Day 14 pics
Today after work I got the wife involved in the reno for the first time. Andy's take on adding seed was to "let the lawn talk to you". Well, some of it had a lot to say and other parts didn't say anything. I had her point out bare or sparse areas from the deck and I ran around and did a little patch work.
With cooler temps, soil moist and 3x a day watering most of my previous spot seedings have germinated in 5-6 days. I plan to stay at 3x a day for one more week and then go to twice a day at 6 hour intervals.
Its starting to look like something I think. From all the reno threads I read I see that from 14 days to 30 days there is a big change. I'm ready for that.

Let the lawn talk to you about when to curb the watering, too. After Sprout-and-Pout, the grass will start to look more "robust" and lawn-like. Factor the weather stresses, too.

Re: Nick's rookie Reno Day 14 pics
I'm low on seed I'm talking like an ounce left low. I don't anticipate needing too much more but I did order some today. The vendor I used was Twin city seed company in Minnesota. I paid $5.10 a pound for sod quality bewitched. Minimum order of 25 pounds. Shipping was ten bucks. 25 pounds of sod quality bewitched for $145.00. I can not believe that. Their supplier is turf murchants inc. Guess who else gets their seed fromTMI? SSS does and they charge a ton more.
I'm pretty happy about this.

Super laid back regular Joe kind of guy to work with. The person I dealt with was Andy. And yes, definitely a new supplier. Someday that list we have could use an updating as well.

Re: Nick's rookie Reno Day 21 pics
Mowed today at around 2". The shady areas were at 3.5 or better. I cut about 15% of the total reno the rest was just exercise(nothing to cut).
Dropped 10-18-6 about 8 lbs over 4.6k sq. ft.
Still have areas that need more seed but we've been getting hard rains about every 2-3 days so it's been difficult to get seed to stay where I put it.
The seed I ordered showed up today. No plastic bag no box just a 25 lb. mesh bag of turfgrass sitting at the door.

Day 24
I'm starting to get pretty pumped about this as the fun part is almost here. Still doing some patch work. Takes time to see the yield from the previous spot seedings. A lot of weed pressure right now. I can pull most, but if it's quack I've left it alone. I'm going to paint this weekend.
