2016 HoosierDaddy Rookie Reno Backyard- Day 60 Pics

Post by HoosierDaddy » July 1st, 2016, 7:26 pm

I am planning a renovation this fall for my backyard. We purchased this home in 2007 and the front and sides were sod with a decent bluegrass sod and the back was hydroseeded with a NoMix blend of some sort. I had been able to get the Front into decent shape but the back has just been a nightmare. I have one neighbor that has a small dandelion/crabgrass/clover farm and the other neighbor rented for a couple of years to some folks who didn't take great care. I have lots of weed pressure in the back and it's a constant battle.

A couple of years ago a friend introduced me to this long slide down the dark path and I haven't looked back.. Thanks HLG! The back is actually looking the best it has ever looked but it's time to get it looking great. This will also serve as a test run for the 2017 Front Yard Reno :) I purchased enough seed to do both plus pots and fill-ins as needed, 15 pounds of Blueberry/Prosperity/Midnight. I had an irrigation system installed in May and have just about everything on hand except for the peat moss for top dressing.

Calm winds + nothing else to do tonight = 32oz glysophate + NIS applied tonight. There's no going back now...

I did the same tonight HD!! Good times!

Humidity and high temps are ahead. I think it's good timing.

Scalped tonight.. took 3 passes to get it all done: 3.5, 2.5 then 1.25... 16 lawn and leaf bags full. 32 empties of my HRX bagger :o
Took 3 hours. That last pass at 1.25 was a killer. 8 of the bags came from it, emptying every 2 rows. Set sprinklers to run 4 times a day for 10 minutes for fallowing. Too tired to rake and drop milo, will have to do tomorrow or Sunday.

Scalp looks good. I raked up what I could and dropped a bag of Milo for the fallow.

I don't know what it is, but somehow a freshly-killed lawn looks cool. Plus, it holds the promise of goodness to come in just a few months!

Looks good!

Agreed, nothing like good and crispy to give way to lime fuzz soon!

Also, I, uh, apparently miscounted my rows

Looks like good, even coverage, except for, well, the one missed row!

Thanks for being enough of a man to own up to it and post it here - it helps all the rest of us in our renovations to know we're not the only ones that make mistakes from time to time!

Spot app of glysophate today on some weeds that have popped up and few lingering green spots. Also edged all the beds including enlarging a couple by about 6 inches. Filled in several low spots and leveled off a few bumps. Fallowing to continue, eyeing a seed drop later this week.

Why fallow for 3 weeks? Because these little suckers pop up sometime between day 17 and day 21:

Truly, I'm not trying to be an @ss, this is an honest question that I've been thinking about lately - Couldn't you fallow for 6 months and have something like this pop up at some point? Or is there really a point where you've killed EVERYTHING that could ever possibly grow there?

It's an "infinite halving" thing -- you can kill more weeds with more time and water, but only you can pick the time when the additional investment isn't worth the additional result. Before the advent of Tenacity at seed-down, fallowing was the only real way (short of soil sterilants) to keep the weed population manageable -- new renovations often started off looking like vegetable gardens. Tenacity changed the game.

Understood, thanks for the explanation. My Tenacity was shipped yesterday. :good:

I apply Tenacity at seed down and make sure to let it sit for a while before watering it in so I get a post emergent and pre emergent effect.

Doesn't take much to kill the dicots at a 4 oz per acre rate.

you'll notice the dicots turn white a week in etc.

I def would not do this weekend before that projected 2-3 inches in a short time. They are warning of floods. Early next week might be good - especially if it looks sunny after a deep soaking like that.

I am eyeing mid next week. 1" of rain expected Mon night. I do have plenty of seed if I get washout after that.

Tenacity is definitely in the plan:

Day1- Milo and sumagrow
Day2- Seed down, then starter, 3 bags of pine bedding pellets, Tenacity at the 4oz/acre rate, Peat top dressing, then Shampoo/KelpHelp.

Looking to get seed down tomorrow. Getting a little nervous. But I think I've got everything I need lined up. Written plan in hand.

Re: 2016 HoosierDaddy Rookie Reno- Backyard Seed Down!

Post by HoosierDaddy » August 21st, 2016, 5:58 pm

Seed down! It's been a long day.

Sumagrow via Chapin 20v @3oz/k
Milorganite @ Double bag rate
During these apps noticed that the recent rains have matted down the stubble pretty badly. 8 inches of rain this week, including 4 just yesterday, and an incredible 2 inches during one 45 minute period. So the next step:
Raked by hand.
Seed down, 2lbs/k mixed with soil moist. Via Scott's hand spreader in 3 passes in different directions.
Starter fertilizer at bag rate.
2 bags of Pine Pellets
Tenacity @4oz/a rate via Chapin
8 3cu ft bags of peat moss via shovel.
Finally 2oz/k KelpHelp, bottle of V05 Shampoo via Chapin
Watered it all in and have sprinklers set to 4x per day.

My pots germinated in 5 days so I'm hoping that I am seeing green babies by next weekend.

I'm very tired now. :)
