Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
First couple cuts were at 1" but I need to raise HOC significantly with this heat to improve rooting and color. Letting it grow out the next few days before next cut at ~2.5". Applied fungicide yesterday to front areas that ended up with crowding due to slope (next to sidewalk). Likely will thin itself out but it's not super sexy looking as it tries to mature.

I think you are in good shape all things considered. Hopefully temps will start winding down in August this year so you can get an early start with an aggressive fert plan.

Thanks. I think so too. It is definitely starting to mature and fill in so I am excited to watch it this fall and next spring.

You can always pull small plugs from the crowded area in about a month, and transplant them to thin areas.
My neighbor had to seed in late June or early July. I haven't seen it close-up yet, but looks ok from a distance. I told him about your success.

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
^ Yeah I'm waiting for the soil conditioner to do its thing. The thin areas have bad soil that I can't even remove plugs from. I should probably dig up those areas and replace it with better soil but I'm too lazy to do that at this point.

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
The barer spots that I am left with (slope washout issues, irrigation coverage) -- I haven't been able to decide on if I should reseed those areas or what the spreading/fill-in expectations should be. I've never had KBG so I don't have any idea what's to be expected this fall.
Any suggestions?

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
Day 84 (front-west full back yard reno) / Day 60 (kill-reno) updates:
In the front (west side of driveway [bare soil reno]) the holes and gaps are almost invisible now (even after 2+ weeks w/ no nitrogen!). Only gripe is some areas that seem to STILL be in sprout and pout... bad soil? Temps drop from 88 and high humidity today down into the low 70s and lows in the 40s (yay fall!).
Tomorrow I will drop 0.5lb N/k (1lb urea/k) on the entire yard.
Yesterday I forgot to mention I spray chems:
Back/sides:
Tenacity 0.3tsp/1gal/k (round 1 - highlight undesirables)
Prodiamine 0.3oz/1gal/k
Ferrous sulfate 4oz/1gal/k
Front:
Tenacity 0.3tsp/1gal/k (round 2)
Ferrous sulfate 4oz/1gal/k

Wow that's filled in nicely. I'd imagine if you start dropping some urea like you say your going to, it will look just great by later in the fall. Nice job!

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
Poa trivialis explosion in the back (medium shade). SURPRISE!
Is it best to way for the Certainty "regimen" in spring (Where it's been shown to be more effective) or start hitting it now in fall?

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
The best information I have found lines up with the Zac Reicher research I've linked below - it is one of my true go-to articles. It comes damned close to saying June to mid-August is the only time to fight with "Certainty". Other articles by Zac indicate that temperatures over 75 degrees are required, with spells of >85 degrees (3 days or more) being optimal while the treatment is working. THIS DOES NOT MEAN TO SIT AROUND AND APPLY IT WHEN A SPELL OF 85+ HAPPENS. See especially Pages 15 and 23.

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
Thanks. It seems that lower applications over a longer term seem to be more effective, overall. Makes sense with something that tends to rebound from the dead. So that essentially means 0.25 oz/A rate with spoon-fed N and Fe to help with KBG chlorosis. From what I understand this will be a battle for years to come but if it's effective, I'm okay starting the regimen now that the Triv is actively growing. Will pick it back up in the spring, and will be most diligent about it with temps above 70 degrees next year. I just want to be cognizant that I have young KBG still so the lower rate/aggression is in my best interest.

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
I'd grade it around a "C" overall. I had some challenging areas due to Poa annua and irrigation coverage issues. It has been REALLY slow to try to fill in and I've only made progress by plugging from pots and other areas. So far I'm pretty disappointed (coming from a pure perennial ryegrass reno) but I am holding out hope for next year... starting with a soil test in early spring '18.

C'mon... that's at least a solid B, especially that last pic. It may not be the PRG instalawn but you've got good coverage nearly everywhere. That's going to look great next spring!

Re: Fusebox 2017 Front/Side Reno
Thanks - it's taken a lot to get here - mainly attacking the Poa annua and keeping a solid Pre-m down. Otherwise I would've seeded the bare areas this fall -- I'm really hoping to see the spreading properties of KBG convince me that I made the right decision. Again, I'm tempering my expectations until it's seen a full year of maturity and will reassess then.

Also, curious to hear your observations on growth rate between the three cultivars. We basically used the same ones and I'm noticing that one grows head and shoulders faster than the others. Given other members' experiences with bewitched being slow growing, I think it may be Mazama or my midnight, Blue Velvet. Have you noticed the same thing?
