That's looking great -- must be nice to have the hope of grass with a year of looking at dirt!

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
Thanks.... I'm not worried I just have too many sloped areas to where it doesn't take much rain to cause washouts.
That year of looking at dirt was awful. Last summer was real bad due to the rain. I could only work on everything about 3 days a week because it was mud most of the time. This summer was just the opposite. It was very dry. It has been weird not having to mow. I miss it.

How often/how long are you watering now that you are almost 2 weeks in?Marinegrunt wrote: ↑September 13th, 2017, 7:35 pmIt's day 12 today since seeding. I woke up to the sound of rain. It rained for almost 2 hours but it was a light, steady rain. I think I might be seeing some of the KBG starting to germinate in a few spots.

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
I'm still watering around 3-4 times a day or enough to keep the soil damp. Some of the kbg has started to germinate but I'm sure a lot of it hasn't yet. I'm afraid if I back off on the watering now I'll lose my kbg. I think I'll back off after the first mow but will probably research and see what's best.hoosierHero wrote: ↑September 14th, 2017, 8:37 am

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
Day 19 today since seed down. We got a nice steady rain last night for a few hours. I heard a downpour start around 2:00 a.m. but it only lasted for a few minutes.
I have some thin spots but nothing too bad. I can see the a lot of the kbg germinating. I am getting a grassy weed but Smast16 said it might be annual rye. I posted pictures in the cool weather grass section but know it's hard to tell from pictures. I sure hope that's all it is.
I know I probably shouldn't be walking on it but did to pull the grassy weed. You can see foot steps in the picture. The grass seems to stand right back up after a couple hours.

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
Lol.... Thanks guys. Pictures always make it look better than what it is. You ought to see it from up the street from a distance. It looks like a new lawn. It's much different up close. I do have a bunch of thin spots especially in the side yard where it slopes. I have little trenches from water runoff that are an inch deep that run 40 feet. Luckily they're only a couple inches wide. I figure I'll fix those after the current grass really takes hold. I'll have to build those little trenches up a tad higher than the rest of the ground so water won't try and follow the same path again. I figure if it does follow that path it will continue to wash the seed away.

John.... I didn't see your post when I posted before.probasesteal wrote: ↑September 20th, 2017, 1:35 pmHaha
He now has Marinegrunt's photos all over his garage to look at when MG isn't working in his yard.
You guys are great. I got a good laugh out of both of you.
He has given me some great compliments. He actually asked me if I'd help point him in the right direction so he can cancel TruGreen. I told him I don't mind helping at all. Little does he know the true reason I want him out in his yard more. Since he'll be out in his lawn working it looks like I'll be the one sitting in a chair staring at him. We'll see how he likes that. Or atleast it'll give me a chance to sneak into his garage and rip the pictures of me down.
I do like the guy. Just a nice guy who recently retired. Hopefully with me giving him tips his hobby will change from staring at me to working on his lawn.
I actually mailed off a soil sample for him yesterday.

Ohhh, newly retired and new hobby in the yard, be careful you might have just made a new competitor.

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
I always like some competition but I just don't see him getting into it too much. I don't even see him putting forth the effort to do any research because his time is too consumed by sitting in his lawn chair and drinking beer. He'll only do as much as I recommend to do and then you can probably cut that list in half.

Re: Marinegrunt's 2017 Fall Renovation
If he has a spreader, tell him to start with some Milorganite. Easy, somewhat dummy proof and feels good to do it. Plus you can smell it (not a bad smell either, even my wife likes it) and feels like you did something. See if that makes him want to do anything more.
