Peat moss vs seed mulch

Post by Marinegrunt » May 15th, 2017, 9:38 pm

Are there any advantages to using peat moss over Encap Seed Mulch or something similar? The Encap says it will cover 1000k and it's about $14 a bag. A 3.8 cubic feet bag of peat moss is roughly $10 and will cover around 350-400 sq/ft at a 1/4". Unless my numbers are off on the peat moss calculations and, the seed mulch will actually cover 1000k, the mulch would cost about half as much as the peat. Are there more benefits in using peat over seed mulch? I tried searching the forum but very few have used the seed mulch. Most have used peat moss but I can't find any reasons why more use it over the mulch or why it is preferred.

1000k? 1 million? Or do you mean 1000 sq ft?
If you mean 1000 sq ft, the seed mulch would be quite a bit less expensive. If you really meant 1000k, it's not even close.

See Re: Encap Lawn Starter Mulch as Reno Topdressing

(assuming you mean Encap Lawn Starter Mulch, not Encap Seed Mulch)

Sorry.....I meant that the bag says it will cover 1000 square feet. I wish it would cover 1000k.

I did mean the lawn starter mulch.

I did see a few topics on it but there wasn't much info. I guess a 12 lb. bag might be a little small to cover 1000 square feet.
