Golf Fairway Bluegrass
Hey all, I have a quick question. I am helping a friend of mine plant a small golf course fariway and green chipping area at his house. We live in MN and are wondering what the best cultivar(s) of KBG are for a project like this. He plans to get a reel mower and maybe keep it at a half inch or so. Any advice people can offer would be helpful.
Thanks for your help,
Brian

Look at the NTEP ratings for mean quality for "Schedule A", which is maintained between .4"-.6"

Several cultivars will do good at .5" height. Bewitched has my vote and it's growth habit means you wont have to mow it as often at that height. Here are some pics of bewitched cut low.

Re: Golf Fairway Bluegrass
I recommended to him Award because of its aggressiveness and color, does that seem reasonable? It also tests well when mowed down to. 5".
The other thing he's looking for is a low maintenance tall fescue like they have on links golf courses. Turns a bit brown to provide contrast and isn't too dense, probably grows to maximum height of 12-20" and needs to be mowed a fee times per year. Any ideas there for me?

Award should do ok as well as others based on NTEP data. Unfortunately my only experience is with bewitched.

Re: Golf Fairway Bluegrass
For the no-mow fescue you're looking at fine fescue or hard fescue (for the links style) not tall fescue (which has a wider, more upright blade/growth). They grow in the lowest fertility environments. As far as varieties within each of those types, I'd just research that yourself on Google since this is more of a home/turf-type forum but I'm sure someone may chime in if they have any experience with the no-mow grasses.
