Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
Thanks Ken/Nancy...I've been breaking all the rules, even applying heavy doses of fertilizer in mid July while the grass was in dormancy. This is to increase P/K per my soil test results. Not to worry though, the backyard is getting renovated in 2018 because while I do have a couple spots that look decent (as in the picture), it was largely a failed renovation. So even if my grass ends up with issues, it will all be dead by next year when I nuke it. Plus, there is enough diversity back there that entire areas won't get wiped. I have quackgrass, course fescue, perennial ryegrass, Poa Trivialis all in heaping quantities.
And 95% of the backyard doesn't look like that picture, that picture is taken in an area where my side yard reno sprinkler zone overlaps with a bit of the backyard, hence it is getting way more water than it should be getting.
Thanks again for the input.

Alright, I'll let you have it .
To be honest, the pictures you posted from 2010 are still burned in my brain. You said you had "30% Poa in there" but yet the lawn was absolutely amazing. Those pictures are what are keeping me motivated that I can overcome and will keep me going even if/when my 2017 "re"-renovation ends up being slautered with Poa Annua again this year.

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
Second round of glyphosate went down today. Given the billions of grass seedlings I have coming up, a fine mist is key in an attempt to hit them. I used a Teejet drift guard nozzle in an attempt to go as fine as I could on the mist spray without ending up with glyphosate misting everywhere. Also got lucky with virtually no breeze this morning. I am very curious as to how many seedlings I am going to kill off, hope I get most of them.
Will do one more glyphosate app in 1.5 weeks right before my seed down date which is still August 10th, weather dependent.

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
Unreal...
My first wave of poa annua seedlings was killed by the glyphosate that I applied on July 30th. Now, after two inches of rain and some days this week with highs in the 60's and BOOM, round 2 of Poa Annua. Billions of grass seedlings coming up everywhere. Its almost like I have an infinite seed bank of Poa annua.
Not sure how I am going to kill this wave, seedlings are way too small so my final glyphosate app will probably not get a good kill and I don't have time to let them mature a bit as I am supposed to seed later this week. Maybe my Tenacity app at seed down will have an effect on the young Poa annua seedlings since I think Tenacity has root activity?
Given my extreme P. annua infestation, I'm doing things differently then I did in last year's failed reno. I will not be reseeding this year. If seed gets washed out I have a bunch of pots growing and will rely on spreading. This will allow me to apply some sort of pre-emergent at the first available opportunity. Also, as previously mentioned, I'll be trying a different & more aggressive tenacity regimen with smaller doses at shorter intervals (I had zero success last year killing Poa annua with Tenacity).

Tenacity is pretty effective on Poa Annua, but timing is important. Don't think that slipping a week is OK.

What is your Tenacity budget for the reno, are you in for the full 16oz/A?

Sounds good. If the weather cools off like October temps are app to do, go with the 7 day interval on the last ones.

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
Final app of glyphosate went down today. Used a bit more of a diluted glyphosate mixture so that I spray longer (basically walked at 1.5mph) in an attempt to hit all these super small Poa annua seedlings.
Also put my monthly fertilizer application down (10/10/10) per Andy's input on my soil test. This will serve as my starter fertilizer.
Weather is shaping up amazingly well this weekend as it is supposed to be cooler, with low humidity and not too breezy. Targeting August 12th for seed down.

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
If you haven't, do a search on tenacity and Poa a. There was an academic article I followed one spring, where I dropped 2oz rate, waited 3-5 days dropped 2oz again, and then did four 1oz sprays 3-4 days apart. Knocked out my Poa a.
I'll see if I can find the article.

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
Thanks so much! Will read it now. I was walking through my yard today ahead of my seed down tomorrow and was a little discouraged by the Poa a. seedlings still coming up. If I can get Tenacity to work for me this year against it, it will be a game changer.probasesteal wrote: ↑August 11th, 2017, 8:18 pmHere is the link. This may be a future endeavour on a mature lawn

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
While the article has some good material, it was written in 2010. That was pretty damned early in the cycle where people began realizing that it had some action against Poa Annua. There has been a lot of tuning of the Tenacity use on Poa Annua since then. Trust later material more for specifics...

Re: Greenrebellion's Fall 2017 Renovation
The deed is done.
Just as a quick recap for those that haven't followed my posts for two years (which I imagine is most of you)...last year I hydroseeded pure KBG and it was a massive failure. An insane amount of Poa annua came up and good grass didn't grow taller than 0.5 inches for 9 monthsj despite dropping Urea like a mofo.
Redoing the front yard this year (planning on redoing the backyard in 2018). Long fallow period this year combined with significant effort over the past 3 months on soil improvement.
Today I:
Put pure Bewitched KBG seed down with soil moist seed coat, rolled it in, Tenacity at 4oz/a, peat moss topdressing. 4.2k sf took me about 4.5 hours or so including clean up at the end. Now the waiting begins. Here's to success to everyone with 2017 renovations.

Just curious, what screen name were you previously using? You've only been registered since last Summer.

This is my only screename. I registered last summer a few weeks before my hydroseed went down (though I had been reading the forum for a month or two prior to registering).
