Nice. Looks like your getting a good early start on seed down.

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
Thanks! The first day was a bust! The first day after seed down I came home and inspected everything for moisture and coverage and so forth.
The front yard was bone dry and I found the oscillating sprinkler in the side yard stuck in one position so only about 30% of it got watered. I doubled my run time in the front yard and replaced the oscillating sprinkler with an impact.
I tested the new run time for the front yard and feel really good about that.
I found some grassy weeds that slipped through the shots of glyphosate. Tomorrow after the last watering I think I'm going to spray some more glyphosate. I think(hope) it should be fine since it's 3 days after seed down. 4-5 days after seeding is too long after because you will have some sprouts.

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
Just returned from a flashlight check on the front yard. Pretty good germination is confirmed. They are all about 1/8-1/4" so not even enough to make green fuzz yet. I'm pretty pumped.
I hope all the rest of you guys have good luck, good weather and good booze!

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
Thanks guys. I'd take pics but it's not even green fuzz yet. I'd guess about 30% is up so far. Had a great first 7 days for the front and side yard. Back yard is on day 1 and got hammered this morning.
Also, around day 5, get your flashlights out and check for sprouts. To me, that is the most fun/rewarding part of the first renovation phase.

I'm curious as to if you ended up applying the glyphosate 3 days after seed down and if you can notice any effect on the germination of the seeds.edenl01 wrote: ↑August 9th, 2017, 9:40 pmI found some grassy weeds that slipped through the shots of glyphosate. I've never applied glyphosate after seed-down (although I have applied glyphosate morning of seed-down) and have thought it would be safe to apply glyphosate a couple days after seed-down, but have never actually done so. Curious to see if you did so and whether or not it had any adverse effect upon the new grass.

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
Just to make sure, it is safe to use Bauer 24 hour grub killer(dylox) on renovation right? Haven't had much luck trapping the like critters. Everyday it's been 8-10 more feet of tunnels in a saturated soil.

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
Yes, it's safe to use dylox on a newly seeded lawn, either before or after germination.
However, do you actually have a grub problem, or just a mole problem?
Moles don't eat only grubs, but also earthworms and any other insects, including ants. I guess my point is that just eliminating the grubs won't get rid of the moles.
Moles thrive in the same environment that fosters an outstanding lawn (rich, fertile soil that has good water infiltration, isn't compacted, has excellent organic matter, etc.) so they're basically a side-effect of having good soil in which to grow a good lawn.
For more reading on moles, I'd recommend "Controlling the Eastern Mole" from the University of Arkansas. This paper addresses the "Folk Remedies, Scare Devices, and Repellents" as well as "Chemical Grub Control" before concluding with the recommendation that trapping moles is the preferred method of getting rid of them and that "grub control alone will likely be ineffective."
For experiences from folks here on trapping moles, this thread should be required reading. I had great success with the Trapline mole traps, thanks to the members of this site!
Read that entire thread on the Trapline traps, get some traps, and away with moles!

Thanks Ken and Nancy. I see there are more moving parts than just grubs. I'm going to invest in the trap line product.

Re: Nick's 2017 Renovation
I've always had good luck with the traps that trigger the spikes of death. I used 3-4 at a time.
A few years back I noticed my 75 year old neighbor out in the yard with a pitch fork each morning and early evening. I finally asked him what he was doing. He said moles come out at 6 am and 6 pm. He watched for the ground to move and would get them. I kind of chuckled but he said he had been doing it all his life. I'm not sure how successful he was tho.

I have. I think I applied 3 days after seed down and it came out fine. I think it was my "failed reno" thread. I'll look it up later if you don't find it.ken-n-nancy wrote: ↑August 15th, 2017, 8:20 pm
