Nice job! Are the pine pellets for anything specific? Haven't seen them used at seed down before.

Here's to hoping for no heavy rains and plentiful drink supply!

Congratulations on seed down, HD!
I can't say what HD's purpose is of course, but I used them on a bewitched monostand renovation a few years back as an overall top dressing strategy. My reno went fine.

I'm a firm believer in the pine pellets for the purpose of moisture management. They serve as an amendment like sawdust, but a little easier to apply in my opinion. But their most important role is noted by my heavier than "normal" applications by hand in my hell strips and adjacent to full sun areas near sidewalks. I think they'll be especially important on new seedlings in these areas as the sun bakes them every day.

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
Do you use them instead of peat moss?
Edit: Just read back through the thread and you mentioned using peat. Curious as to how you use pine pellets in conjunction with peat moss. Wouldn't you smother the seeds?

No, in addition to peat moss. Pine pellets went down right after seed. Just spread generally around, with hand delivery for problem areas as noted. Everything gets covered by a nice layer of peat with the peat roller.

Interesting. Obviously it worked for you but not something I would've thought of. Well, another tool in the toolbox.

HLG is a good one to learn from, and now I've joined in on the fun for Hamilton County renos this Fall.

16 days after seed down and I have very little germination. I'm beginning to worry now.

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
I'd give it a bit more time. Lawns around here are the brownest they've been all year. Maybe Chesto can chime in for comparison?

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
I am noticing a little more each day. Just not anywhere near what I experienced last year. I'm not quite to panic mode yet, but I'm not too far away either.

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
Hoosier, did you apply any starter fertilizer?

I did not apply a starter, but applied bag rate of Milo at seed down.

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
I didn't use any fertilizer at seed down this year. I've noticed it's a good bit behind visually but the roots are a lot farther along than they were last year at the same days after seed down using a starter.

How can you tell the roots are farther along?

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno
I pulled some out to look at them. Last year around the 3 week mark the roots were quarter inch or less. This year they were a good bit beyond that. This is all my opinion based on eyeball observations and nothing more.

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno- Day 21 pics
Here's where we're at on day 21. About 25% of the areas with any germination at all. And I'm concerned about what is germinating on those areas: immediate tillering, no sprout and pout just quick jumps to 2-3 inches. I have bad sprinkler coverage in the front with some areas nearly dry and some with mudslides. I'll post some pics and then a final post asking for help with next steps.
Main front area (zone 1) with some green fuzz but not much. This is the best covered area. Also you can see the mudslides on the left, but the areas in front of the tree nearly dry out before the next irrigation cycle (5 hours)
This is one of the 3 hell strip areas. Almost zero germination
