2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno

Post by HoosierDaddy » June 21st, 2017, 9:23 am

aka "...and that's how the divorce began." Despite having what my wife thinks is the best front yard on the block, I am planning a renovation this fall for my 1500 sq ft front yard. Background: We purchased this home in 2007 and the front and sides were sod with a decent bluegrass sod and the back was hydroseeded with a NoMix blend of some sort. 2016 backyard reno is here: viewtopic.php?f=13&t=20520 Lots of lessons learned and they will all be applied to the front.

I was planning using the Blueberry/Prosperity/Midnight combo again, but I was going to mix in some Bewitched in the shadier areas. However, I am leaning (about 95% at this point) towards a Bewitched monostand. I'd like the consistency of a single cultivar.

I have in ground irrigation, a peat roller, and everything on hand except for the top dressing. Mid to late July for the kill, then August 12th or 19th as likely seed-down dates.

This is the front that's a few short weeks away from nukification. It looks ok, especially from a distance, but it's time to die. Too many flaws that probably only I can see but I want great not good:

Nice, but next time try to take the picture when you're standing in the same state.

Good Idea to go with a Bewitched monostand for shady areas. My 2015 reno is a 50/50 blend of Bewitched, Blue Velvet and there is a huge difference in growth rates in the shade cast by a Maple. A monostand or 75/25 Bewitched, Blue Velvet blend would have been much better.

It looks like you influenced the neighbors to install irrigation.

Jackpine- I'm looking forward to the consistency I think the monostand will provide. Thanks!

g-man- Yes, finally! He used the same guy I used, as pointed out to me by HLG.

A little disappointed in round 1 of the kill. Some areas were my misses but also didn't seem to do well overall. Sprayed again tonight.

HoosierDaddy No pressure but... I'm just going to let you know I'm stalking this topic so I can take queues from you on when to start stuff. ha! I'm just going to over seed this year but it's all new to me. ;)

Real quick, if I'm over seeding will I be OK without putting down peat or compost? The wife is getting on me about the cost of my hobby. ;)

If you're just over seeding no need to top dress. The thatch and grass will help keep things moist. It might not hurt to hit the lawn with a roller after seed down to help with seed to soil contact.

M3- I have a good timeline in my 2016 reno. The primary differences this year will be a peat spreader to ensure even spread and no hesitation on fall post-reno pre-em. Fought Poa A. all spring. Also check out HoosierLawnGnome for his 2014 Bewitched reno, from whom I took my inspiration. :) HLG is a friend who introduced me to this place. I was here for 3 years before I did my 1st reno last year. Following the practices offered here (weed triangle, soil test and amendments, nitrogen regimens) provided me with the best lawn on the block. So in 2016 I nuked it. I want the Best Lawn in Fishers. (Sorry g-man!)

Awwwww shucks. You can hold your own, HD. You know what you're doing. :D

Good luck and the peat roller is a great addition no doubt.

Good timing with the dropping temps and nice rain today!

Re: 2017 HoosierDaddy Front Reno- Seed Down

Post by HoosierDaddy » August 12th, 2017, 3:09 pm

SEED DOWN!

Seed. Pine Pellets @ 50lbs/k with the hi-flow (so nice for spreading those chunkers). Tenacity @4oz/acre rate. 9cu ft of peat with the peat moss spreader (my top new device for the year- the coverage last year determined the successful vs. crappy portions of the reno. Perfect even coverage this year) and by hand (hell strips.) Finally, 2.5oz/k of V05 shampoo and 3(ish)oz/k of kelp help. Sprinklers set for 4 times per day. Now.. I drink.
