SNOWBOB11 Bewitched Monostand Renovation 2017

Post by SNOWBOB11 » July 6th, 2017, 10:25 pm

It's less than two weeks before my first planned app of glyphosate. I've got all my supplies on order and they should be arriving in the next few days. This will be my second reno on this lawn but first using KBG.

I've decided to go with a bewitched monostand. I really like the way bewitched looks from looking at some other renovations on the site. It's also because of the shade tolerance of bewitched. I've got a big ash tree on the lawn which gives a good amount of shade and although it's not what I would call dense shade, I think bewitched is the best way to go. I know I didn't have to go with a monostand but I'm willing to put in the extra time to try and keep it fungal free and deal with any other problems that I don't know about yet with having a monostand. Also I like the look and even growing habits of going with a mono.

I've got 2500 SQ FT in the front and 500 SQ FT in the side to reno. Not a massive lawn but I also don't have irrigation so i'll be... wait for it... watering the seed by hand. No sprinklers as I find the problems with wash out and uneven coverage to be a problem, so i'm going the hose nozzle route.

Hoping to get the seed down around Aug 10th or so. All in all i'm looking forward to getting started and seeing how things turn out.

Sounds like you made your choices for reasons you fully understand. You also seem to be one of the first to say you're ready to go.

Best of luck!

3000 Sq ft by hand...wow. FWIW, I'm completely satisfied with the coverage I get from my oscillating sprinklers. The cheap $25 one from Lee Valley and the Gardena one both work great. Anyways, best of luck!

Thanks Andy, and thanks ll0oDQLE. After the first month or so and when the seeds sprout and start growing more I might switch to a oscillating sprinkler. But for the initial start I definitely feel more comfortable water myself. It's how I did it last time I did a reno on the lawn and the germination I had was really good. It's time consuming for sure but I can work things out so I have the time the first several weeks to keep the seeds moist. I have three or four 50' hoses that I attach together and I walk around the lawn so I never have to drag the hose across the seeds. We'll see how it goes.

Sounds good. I did hand water certain areas that didn't get as good a coverage from my sprinkler during my 2015 renovation. They got hit by the sprinkler but not as wet so they dried out faster. I had a tiny lawn with a tree and a bush obstructing the spray though. But yeah, if you want to be absolutely anal about it (which we all tend to be) then hand watering definitely ensures you get good coverage. I also hand watered the first two overseeds I did before the reno. That was before I discovered what an oscillating sprinkler was. Lol with the spreading ability of KBG, I don't worry about it too much anymore.

Applied the first round of glyphosate today. I got some before pics that i'll post later. I bought a 1 gallon sprayer to spray with as I didn't want to use my 2 gallon sprayer that I use to spray other things with. I am using southern ag 41% glyphosate concentrate which I mixed at 3-3.5 fl oz per gallon. That's a bit stronger than the recommended rate but I wanted to make sure I got a good nuke.

I wasn't sure if I needed to mix surfactant in with it so I called a southern ag main office branch and they said it has it in it already. I wanted to make sure though so I called seed ranch and they just read the label and said it looks like it has it in it already. I was still not satisfied so I called another southern ag branch and the guy said I should mix 1 tsp per gallon of surfactant in because it doesn't have any. I ended up mixing some in with each gallon as I figured even if it does have some there's no harm to mix in a bit more.

Neighbors already think i'm crazy and still talk about the time I nuked the lawn before so I cant imagine what they're going to think in a few days.

Hi snowbow, good luck on the reno! I'll be following very closely, since our situations are VERY similar. Curious where you ended sourcing your seed from. I had some hit or miss luck with BarretYoung this spring and ended up cancelling my order.

Hey bmelz, I did end up going with brettyoung for the seed. I tried to get other places from the US to ship to me but no one would. My bewitched seed is to be delivered on thursday and i'll be starting some pots on the weekend. Unfortunately they would only sell the seed in 50 pound bags in ontario. I'm only doing 3k so I need just 9-10 pounds, plus a little extra if I need to reseed anywhere. That leaves me with a lot of left over. No biggy though, if things go well then maybe the back yard will be next.

Seed arrived today. 50 pounds of certified bewitched bluegrass.

Also got some urea for later in the reno. I noticed the grains of the urea are very round, kind of shiney and a bit different to the urea at tsc stores. I asked the brett young rep that dropped off the seed if it was fast acting non coated urea and he said yes but for some reason I'm just not sure. I attached a pic, it's kind of a bad pic but does this look like the urea you all use?

Forgot to say, on the bag of the urea it says MDU...1.76% max. Not sure what that means but just wanted to make sure it's all good to use for the aggressive fall N regime. I'm probably overthinking it but I don't want to end up burning the grass by doing weekly fertilizer apps because I used the wrong thing.

BTW, I wanted to wait to say this until you received your seed but you got balls killing your lawn before actually having seed on hand. Lol

Yeah I know lol, I called before I sprayed to make sure everything was ok and there were no hiccups with the seed, but I was still a bit nerves until this morning when the seed came.

Good to know the urea looks right.

OK, I'm a little confused. You have 50 pounds of Bewitched seed and a 3000 square foot lawn? That would call for about 6 to 9 pounds of grass seed. Do you have some friends who are also renovating?

EDIT: Ah, I read further and see that they wouldn't sell you less than 50 pounds. How big is the back lawn so you can renovate that next year?

Back yard is less than 1k. Yeah I know, i'm going to have a ton of seed left lol. There wasn't much I could do though if I wanted to plant a elite bluegrass lawn. The place I bought from mainly sells to golf courses so they didn't want to sell less than a full #50 bag to me.

On a separate note the grass has really browned up now as it's D5 since glyphosate app #1. I'm planning on scalping today. Should be fun.

Spent the day scalping the lawn and bagging the clippings. Went over the area several times first at 2" then at the lowest setting the mower would go. Something that's been talked about many times on this site is not to wait too long after first app of glyphosate to scalp and for sure that's the best way to go. To be honest it went really well and looks good. I'll go over the lawn again for sure but I already would have good seed/soil contact after just the first scalp.
