Thought I'd post a couple pics of the pots I started about 12 days ago. There doing well so far.

If the main lawn can look like this by day 12 I'd be good with that. I'm thinking about giving them a shot of urea at the two week mark and see how they respond.

On a separate note I planted some Scotts nomix seed in the back yard in some thin spots on the same day as I dropped the kbg in the front yard reno area. The seed out back is already 1/2 inch tall and it's only been 4 days. Crazy how fast it germinates compared to bluegrass.

I'm hoping to get some germination in the next 2 days in the reno as that would be on par with the pots I started.

Your pots look way better than mine. Dark green and lots of germination. What soil did you use and what is the sun exposure in where you have them?

I used scotts lawn soil. I filled the pots, compressed the soil, seeded and then top dressed with some more scotts soil. It's interesting, two of the pots I didn't top dress at all just to see how they did compared to the others that were top dressed. The two that were not top dressed are the thinnest and were the slowest to sprout. The pots are beside the detached garage and there is a large tree that the branches cover this area so while it does get sun in the early morning and evening it gets a lot of shade as well through the afternoon. Not sure what your pots looked like in person at around day 12 but the last pic you posted of them they were looking really good.

The last pics I posted were a week ago and that makes them about 3 - 3.5 months old. The funny thing again is that it's just the Bewitched that's not germinating well. All other cultivars and even my 3 other pots of blends germinated pretty good. I have mine in full sun (on my deck on a south facing yard) so maybe it's just too scorched. They were growing during the heat of summer, June/July. I used Viola Black Earth bagged soil this time. In the past, I used Scotts Lawn soil with the fertilizer and my pots were great. I did it like you did as well, pressed in and top dressed with more soil.

I saw the first sprouts of germination today. There too small to take a picture of but they are there in a few spots. It's interesting but this is day 5 since seed down which is one day quicker than how long it took for my pots to germinate. Hopefully just the start.

Ya, I found quicker germination in the lawn versus pots as well. Relative to last year (when I used award/prosperity/bewitched mix) I am having great difficulty in getting my 100% bewitched pots to germinate and establish. There are still many ungerminated seeds or seeds that are just germinating and it is day 19 for my pots.

Keep those pics coming once you get a bit more germination in your reno area!

Interesting. I had issues with my Bewitched pots as well. Maybe BW is more sensitive to heat/light/moisture than other cultivars for germination.

Quick shot of the germination from this morning.

This is day 6

There's good germination in many areas. One thing I did notice is the areas that the peat moss didn't kind of wash away from watering has better germination than areas that have less peat, but I guess that is to be expected.

Took a few pics of the progress at 1 1/2 weeks from seed down. The lawn is progressing nicely but slowly. After overseeding many times before with nomix seed and doing one reno using nomix seed, using kbg is a real test of your patience lol. There's good germination coverage in many areas but there are a few that are lacking in sprouts. I will wait another week or so before I decide on dropping some more seed/peat or not. There's still sprouts poping up in the pots I planted and there at day 19.

Speaking about the pots. I gave them a shot of urea at the two week mark and they seemed to respond well with it. There almost tall enough to need a trimming now. Here's the pics.

You can kind of see in the last pic one area that's not germinated very good so far along the fence. There are some sprouts but this is a area I might have to seed again.

Temps have been very cool for late August so maybe that is why the grass is progressing a bit slow. It's supposed to warm up a bit this week so hopefully that might help. We'll see.

Looking good for a 1 1/2 weeks, be patient and think about giving the lawn a shot of fertilizer at the 2 week mark. I only had to re seed a couple of areas in my Bewitched monostand, but when I started the weekly light N applications, it really filled in. I used about 0.5 pounds of N/1K sqft weekly.

I disagree strongly on the "shot of fertilizer at the two week mark". Grass naturally goes through Sprout and Pout to develop roots. Early fertilization forces extra top-growth supported by lower-than-average roots. When it is still hot, that can be a recipe for stress and disease. Wait out Sprout and Pout and don't add fertilizer until growth picks up naturally or 30 days have passed.

One of the reasons I gave my pots some urea at two weeks was because I saw your thread Paul, and how you feed the lawn early and often. Your grass turned out great so I was planning on doing the same thing on the reno area but wanted to give the pots a try first to see how they would do.

Now I'm at a cross road after reading your post above Andy.

Oops, accidentally hit post before I was done. Anyway I was going to say. I might now wait for after spout and pout to hit it with fertilizer. Giving it a shot of fertilizer from two weeks onward might be better suited for someone more experienced than me who is better at knowing how far they can push the limit.

One question for you Andy when you get a chance. If I did start weekly apps of urea after 30 days would you go straight to .50 pound n per k (about 1 pound of urea)? Or would you start at a lower amount?

Like many (most) of my recommendations, my answer would be to use your eyes and make a decision based on what you see (not a calendar or what someone else says). If the grass is wispy and fragile at 30 days, ramp up more gently - if it is robust go to 1 lb/k urea.

If you want to chronicle sprout and pout vs what we would like to see progress wise :yahoo: take pics at 3, 4 and 5 weeks.
